The Spanish defence group Indra disclosed this week that Rheinmetall will incorporate its NEMUS radar into the StrikeShield protection system, a move that sharpens the German company’s sensor capabilities for modern armoured vehicles. The NEMUS radar is a versatile piece of kit: with the same hardware it can detect extremely slow drones moving at ten metres per second while simultaneously tracking high-velocity projectiles travelling faster than 2,000 metres per second. Once a threat is identified, StrikeShield calculates the trajectory and selects the appropriate countermeasure, neutralising the incoming projectile moments before impact. Indra’s technology is already embedded in major European programmes such as FAMOUS, giving Rheinmetall a ready-made technological lever for future retrofit contracts.

The radar pact arrives as Rheinmetall used the Eurosatory exhibition in Paris to present a sweeping portfolio across air defence, autonomous systems and digital battlefield integration. Central to that pitch was the Battlesuite platform, an open reconnaissance and effect network that ties together sensors, weapons and command nodes. The containerised multiple rocket launcher CML also drew attention: a fully autonomous, modular system that turns civilian or military logistics hubs into mobile launch points, designed to work alongside the new FV-014 loitering munition. One NATO customer has already validated the concept with a successful live-fire test, and in April 2026 Rheinmetall signed a multi-billion euro framework agreement with Germany’s armed forces.

Beyond hardware, the company is pushing deep into space-based intelligence. The joint venture with ICEYE to manufacture synthetic aperture radar satellites carries a gross contract value of roughly 1.7 billion euros. Those reconnaissance feeds are intended primarily to protect the Lithuania Brigade and NATO’s eastern flank. At Eurosatory, Rheinmetall also inked a letter of intent with General Atomics to cooperate on the Vektrex precision?guided 155?mm munition.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

All of which plays into chief executive Armin Papperger’s insistence on the €40 billion revenue target by 2030. In the first quarter of 2026 the company generated sales of 1.94 billion euros, while the Weapon and Ammunition segment — which houses the protection systems — delivered an operating result of 117 million euros and an operating margin nudging 20%. The defence division’s order backlog stood at over 25 billion euros at the end of March. For the current financial year, Rheinmetall is guiding for revenue of up to 14.5 billion euros.

The stock, however, remains a puzzle. At 1,217.20 euros on Friday it gained nearly 3.8%, yet it still trades below its 50?day moving average of roughly 1,283 euros. Analyst consensus sits at 1,889 euros, with the highest price target reaching 2,500 euros and a clear buy recommendation. The disparity between operational momentum and share price suggests the market is weighing execution risk against the long?term digital?platform narrative — a tension that the Indra radar alliance is designed to ease by reinforcing Rheinmetall’s role as a systems integrator rather than a pure parts supplier.
