The iShares MSCI Global Semiconductors ETF has clawed back from a brutal mid-week selloff, closing Friday at €19.30 with a daily gain of over 4%. Yet the bounce did little to erase the damage: the fund still ended the week 2.62% lower, a sharp reminder that the chip sector remains hostage to sudden shocks.

Two events triggered the rout. ON Semiconductor’s decision to buy rival Synaptics entirely in stock – a deal valued at roughly $7 billion – sent its own shares plunging more than 20%, the steepest one-day drop in four years. Investors recoiled at the dilution, a fear that rippled through the broader chip complex and dragged the ETF lower midweek.

Almost simultaneously, Meta Platforms announced its own strategic shift: the social-media giant will build a dedicated cloud business, selling excess AI computing capacity to external customers. The market welcomed the move with double-digit gains for Meta’s stock, but the fallout for the hardware supply chain was immediate. Shares of specialized cloud providers CoreWeave and Nebius lost more than 10% apiece. “Neocloud companies have grown explosively on orders from Meta,” noted Gil Luria, an analyst at D.A. Davidson. “That demand could now evaporate quickly.”

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying iShares MSCI Global Semiconductors UCITS ETF USD Acc?

The ETF, which invests heavily in chip designers and equipment makers, felt the twin blows directly. If big cloud operators start sourcing their graphics processors differently, analysts are already revising revenue forecasts for the entire supply chain. That uncertainty compounded an existing headache: persistent oversupply in NAND memory chips is squeezing margins, even as strong demand for AI logic chips provides a partial offset.

Adding to the week’s jitters, star investor Michael Burry disclosed new short positions against Micron Technology and the wider semiconductor sector, warning of “irrational overheating” in AI-related stocks. Micron, which accounts for nearly 9% of the ETF’s holdings, also faces a fresh legal battle. In early July, a class-action lawsuit was filed in the United States accusing Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix of illegal price-fixing in memory chips.

Despite the turmoil, the ETF’s long-term uptrend remains intact. The fund has nearly doubled since the start of the year, boasting a gain of roughly 95%, and continues to trade well above its 50-day moving average of €17.84. Yet volatility is extreme – the fund has swung more than 68% over the past 30 days – making sharp reversals par for the course.

All eyes now turn to Samsung, which is due to report quarterly results on July 7. The South Korean heavyweight’s update will offer concrete data on the sector’s current fault lines: booming orders for AI logic chips versus chronic overcapacity in NAND flash. For an ETF that has already been put through the wringer, the next set of earnings could either reinforce the rebound or spark another selloff.
