Shell's Caribbean Gambit: A Strategic Pivot Amid Market Volatility

While investors focus on Shell's upcoming earnings and buyback decisions, a quieter strategic shift is unfolding in the Caribbean that could reshape its long-term gas portfolio. The energy giant is poised to take control of the massive Loran gas field off Venezuela's coast, a move that cleverly solves a pressing supply issue for its Atlantic LNG operations in neighboring Trinidad and Tobago.

This expansion is made possible by a dramatic political realignment in Venezuela. Following the arrest of Nicolas Maduro, the U.S. launched a $100 billion reconstruction program. A new hydrocarbon law enacted in January now offers foreign investors tax advantages and greater operational control. Shell is seizing the opportunity, negotiating for three additional offshore fields in the Mariscal Sucre project. Combined with its existing Dragon field, these assets would give Shell access to combined reserves of roughly 20 trillion cubic feet of gas.

The operational genius lies in the logistics. The Loran field, containing a colossal 7.3 trillion cubic feet of gas, is set to be acquired from rival Chevron. Shell plans to connect it directly to its existing Manatee platform in Trinidad via subsea drilling, bypassing the need for expensive new infrastructure. This influx of gas is critical, as Atlantic LNG's facilities have been running well below capacity due to supply shortages.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Shell?

Back in Europe, shareholders are preparing for a packed financial calendar. The company has issued the formal invitation for its Annual General Meeting, set for May 19 in a hybrid format at London Heathrow Airport. This follows a key series of events: the publication of official analyst consensus estimates on April 29 and, most crucially, the release of first-quarter 2026 results on May 7. That earnings report is widely expected to announce a new share buyback program, seamlessly succeeding the current $3.5 billion tranche that concludes at the end of April.

The market has rewarded Shell's disciplined capital returns and strategic maneuvering. The stock, trading at €39.48, hovers just below a 52-week high reached just last week. Since the start of the year, the share price has advanced a solid 23 percent.

Operationally, the quarter presents a paradox. Geopolitical disruptions in the Middle East, particularly around activities in Qatar, are pressuring the integrated gas division. LNG production volumes are expected to fall to between 880,000 and 920,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. Yet this very turmoil has turbocharged the trading division, which booked significantly stronger oil trading results compared to the previous quarter. A favorable refining environment, where indicative margins climbed from $14 to $17 per barrel, provided an additional tailwind.

CEO Wael Sawan anticipates final investment decisions for at least two of the Venezuelan projects later this year. For now, the immediate focus is on the May milestones that will define the company's financial framework and shareholder returns for the year ahead.
