Silver’s $8 Range Friday: Tariffs, Inflation, and Physical Scarcity Overshadow a 10% Intraday Plunge

Silver saw extreme volatility after hot US inflation data and India's import duty hike. A stronger dollar and fading rate-cut hopes pressured prices, but collapsing COMEX inventories signal a tight physical market with support near $82.70.

Friday delivered one of the most volatile sessions for silver this year. The white metal hit an intraday low of $76.34 per ounce — a drop of more than 10% — before clawing back most of those losses to settle at $84.06, a net decline of 4.64% on the day. The wild swings left traders scrambling, as macro headwinds collided with a physical market that is growing ever more strained.

The catalyst was a fresh burst of US inflation data. Import and export prices surged in April, while the consumer price index rose 3.8% year-on-year and producer prices notched their sharpest monthly increase since early 2022. Ongoing conflict in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz added fuel to the fire. Markets have now fully priced out any Federal Reserve rate cut for 2026, with some traders even assigning a 30% probability to a rate hike by December. A stronger dollar materialized as a direct consequence, piling pressure on precious metals that offer no yield.

Adding to the headwinds, India raised import duties on gold and silver from 6% to 15% in a bid to shore up its trade balance and support the struggling rupee. Indian silver imports could drop by as much as 20% in the near term, a blow to a market that is already structurally tight. Yet beneath the surface, the physical story tells a very different narrative from the paper-driven rout. COMEX inventories have collapsed from 531 million ounces last October to roughly 315 million ounces today, with 95 million ounces leaving US warehouses in the first months of 2026 alone. The ratio of deliverable metal to open contracts now stands at a meagre 15%, meaning a wave of paper claims faces a shrinking pool of physical silver. With the next delivery month just ten days away, the potential for price dislocation remains acute.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Silber Preis?

The fundamental deficit continues to underpin the longer-term outlook. The Silver Institute forecasts a sixth consecutive supply shortfall in 2026, pegged at around 46 million ounces. Industrial demand, which accounts for roughly half of global consumption, is a key driver. Photovoltaic manufacturers are actively reducing the silver content per panel, a trend that could temper near-term growth, but the Silver Institute still expects total industrial offtake to exceed 700 million ounces annually by 2030. Given that about 70% of silver production is a by-product of base-metal mining, output cannot quickly scale to fill the gap. The recent US-China trade ceasefire has given a boost to solar-panel and electronics demand, further tightening the physical balance.

Analysts remain cautiously optimistic despite Friday’s downturn. J.P. Morgan sees the average price for the year at $81 per ounce, while the Reuters consensus sits at $79.50. On the charts, the 100-day moving average at $82.70 provides near-term support; a break below the 50-day average at $77.22 would signal deeper weakness. On the upside, $85 remains the critical resistance. A weekly close above that level would snap the current downtrend and open the door to renewed bullish momentum.

The week ahead, starting May 19, will hinge on fresh US economic data and whether the trade ceasefire holds. For now, silver remains one of the most sensitive barometers of global risk appetite — caught between an inflation-driven selloff on one side and a tightening physical vise on the other.
