SK Hynix shares suffered a 14% single-day drop on Meta cloud fears, but remain up 258% YTD. Key catalysts: Samsung earnings and Nasdaq debut this week.

SK Hynix Stock Tumbles 14% in a Day, but AI Memory Supercycle Still Intact

SK Hynix shareholders have just endured one of the most volatile weeks in recent memory, with the stock tumbling more than 14% in a single session before clawing back some ground. The shares closed at 2,425,000 Korean won on Friday, leaving a weekly loss of 9.28% — yet the year-to-date gain still stands at a staggering 258%. The question now is whether this correction is a healthy breather within an AI-driven supercycle or the start of a deeper reversal.

The proximate cause of the panic was a report that Meta Platforms is building a cloud business to sell excess AI computing capacity rather than continue expanding its own data centres. Investors read that as a potential slowdown in memory demand, triggering a 14.5% rout on 2 July that swept through the entire semiconductor complex, including Samsung Electronics. The sell-off was amplified by an overbought stock and thin support beneath the recent highs.

Now two catalysts are converging that will test the AI memory narrative. On 7 July, Samsung Electronics releases its preliminary second-quarter results. Analysts expect record operating profits from the sector’s bellwether, and a strong showing would reaffirm that demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) remains insatiable. Just three days later, SK Hynix itself begins trading on the Nasdaq via American Depositary Receipts, planning to raise up to $29.4 billion to fund its capacity expansion. The final offer price will be set on 9 July.

The constructive case: pricing power and a packed order book

Supporters of the stock point to structural demand that shows no sign of letting up. Mirae Asset forecasts global tech investment of $806 billion this year, a 73% increase from 2023, while the big tech companies are sitting on a combined order backlog of $2.1 trillion — 24% higher than the previous quarter.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

SK Hynix is capitalising on the scarcity by abandoning traditional pricing caps. In new supply contracts, the company has introduced minimum volume commitments and expanded contract durations from the standard twelve months to between three and five years. Customers are willing to lock in these terms because the alternative — not enough HBM — is far more costly.

The company’s production capacity for HBM is completely sold out through 2027, giving it extraordinary pricing power. That has created a solid technical floor around 2,333,000 won, a level that held during the recent volatility. On the upside, the stock remains 18.81% below its record high set on 25 June, leaving room for recovery if the macro climate cooperates.

HSBC analysts also note a persistent valuation gap with US rival Micron Technology, which has historically traded at a 35% premium thanks to better access to American investors. The Nasdaq listing could finally close that gap, providing an additional tailwind for SK Hynix shares.

The bearish counter: overhang from capacity and competition

Sceptics are not questioning the AI demand thesis itself — they worry about positioning and medium-term supply dynamics. The stock was heavily overbought before the Meta-driven sell-off, making it vulnerable to any negative headline. The 14.5% plunge in a single day laid bare the fragility of that momentum.

After the Nasdaq debut, some analysts warn of a classic buy?the?rumour, sell?the?fact move. Morningstar flags another longer-term risk: Chinese memory manufacturers are ramping up capacity rapidly, which could trigger a glut. That threat becomes more acute when the HBM4 competition intensifies in the second half of 2026. Samsung has reportedly closed the gap both technologically and on price in negotiations with major AI clients.

Meanwhile, SK Hynix is committing massive investment to the Yongin cluster, and the South Korean government is subsidising a wider expansion of domestic chip production. Over time, that could produce meaningful oversupply — but not before 2030, according to industry estimates.

The near-term checklist

For the next few days, the direction of the stock hinges on two tangible events. Samsung’s preliminary results on 7 July serve as a proxy for the entire memory segment. If they meet or beat expectations, the correction from the June high will likely be viewed as a healthy consolidation. If they disappoint, the selling pressure could intensify.

SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

On the macro front, the US ISM services data due on 6 July and the Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes on 9 July will influence the broader risk appetite. A weak ISM reading below 50 would ease rate?hike fears and favour tech stocks. Conversely, hawkish language from the Fed would sap liquidity from a sector already prone to swings — SK Hynix’s annualised volatility is 114%.

Should the shares resume their slide, the next major support lies at the 50-day moving average of 2,046,220 won. A break below that would open the door to the 100-day average near 1,499,840 won — a level that has not been tested in months.

Investors are positioning themselves for a verdict that arrives in less than a week. Samsung’s numbers and the Nasdaq pricing will deliver a clear signal on whether the AI memory story is merely taking a breather or losing momentum.
