Yet the risks are equally concrete, and some come from the company’s own leadership. On July 20, Chey Tae-won himself warned that current memory prices are “abnormally high” and need to normalize to avoid a market contraction — a remarkable signal from the very top that pricing power in DRAM and NAND may be approaching its ceiling sooner than expected.
Meanwhile, Chinese memory maker CXMT is reportedly expanding capacity to 500,000 wafers per month by 2028. Morgan Stanley projects China will account for 30 percent of net global DRAM wafer additions by then. For a company whose stock is 126 percent annualized volatile, any sign of oversupply — especially if HBM prices soften after 2026 — could accelerate the retreat.
The market structure itself amplifies the fragility. Samsung and SK Hynix now represent roughly half the entire KOSPI weighting, up from about a quarter at the end of last year. A sharp move in either stock drags the entire index. The same concentration is visible in the S&P 500, where semiconductors alone account for about 20 percent — a concentration that historically has proved hard to sustain.

The Q2 report on July 29 is the next crucial catalyst. Should management confirm that HBM capacity is fully booked through 2027 and deliver an operating profit in line with or above the market expectation of roughly 65 trillion won, the tide could turn. But if the HBM4 ramp disappoints — as NH Investment & Securities analyst Ryu Young-ho has flagged — or if guidance signals a cooling of AI investment or a “price normalization,” the retreat could extend. For now, SK Hynix is caught between a regulatory squeeze designed to cool retail speculation and a fundamental demand story that remains the most compelling in global memory.
