SK Hynix Mega-Listing Casts Shadow Over Ams Osram's Meteoric Rise

Ams Osram’s stock slips nearly 6% weekly as $26.5B SK Hynix Nasdaq debut forces fund managers to rotate out of European chip stocks, despite strong balance sheet improvements.

Ams Osram has more than doubled this year, but a powerful sector rotation tied to one of 2026's biggest stock-market debuts has put the brakes on the rally. The Austrian sensor and photonics specialist slipped in Friday trading and posted a weekly loss of nearly 6%, dragged down not by its own fundamentals but by a tidal wave of institutional capital flowing out of European chip stocks.

The culprit is SK Hynix, which lists on the Nasdaq on 10 July with a blockbuster offering valued at roughly $26.5bn. The South Korean memory-chip giant's arrival is forcing large fund managers to reshuffle their portfolios, pulling money from existing semiconductor holdings to make room for the new name. Ams Osram, despite its recent operational wins, is squarely in the firing line of that reallocation.

Those wins have been substantial, however. On 1 July the company closed the sale of its analog and mixed-signal sensor business to Infineon, netting €570m in cash that CEO Aldo Kamper is channeling straight into debt reduction. The leverage ratio is estimated to have fallen from 3.3 to around 2.5, and earlier in May the group refinanced its bonds, slashing the coupon from 12.25% to 7.25%. The goal is a sustainably positive free cash flow by 2027. Yet Fitch remains unconvinced. The rating agency calculates Ams Osram's EBITDA leverage at 6.3 for the end of 2025, far above the company's own pro-forma figure, and the first quarter of 2026 still produced a net loss of roughly €154m. Analysts do not expect positive earnings per share until 2027, underscoring the gap between the market's optimism and the balance sheet's reality.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ams Osram?

Adding to the crosscurrents, reports that Meta Platforms is considering renting out spare AI computing capacity have stirred fears of margin compression among cloud-infrastructure suppliers – a key end-market for Ams Osram's optical connectivity technology. That bearish whisper was partly offset earlier in the week when HSBC more than doubled its price target on Intel to $200, citing an expected surge in server-CPU demand for 2026 and 2027. The conflicting signals have kept the stock volatile, with annualised swings of around 98%.

Technically, the recent pullback leaves the shares trading near their 50-day moving average of €20.20, while the relative-strength index sits at a neutral 51.7. From the 52-week low of €7.38 hit on 1 December 2025, the stock has more than tripled, but it still sits 23.6% below its May high of €26.70. Investors now have their sights trained on 4 August, when Ams Osram publishes its second-quarter and first-half results. The focus will be on how the remaining core businesses are integrating into the new "Digital Photonics" structure, as well as updated forecasts for AI data-centre and augmented-reality demand. Until then, the tug-of-war between a fast-improving balance sheet and external sector pressures seems set to continue.
