SK Hynix’s Nvidia Alliance and Leveraged ETF Meltdown: Two Sides of a Volatile Coin

SK Hynix found itself caught in a bizarre market schism this week. The stock rebounded nearly 16% on Tuesday to 2,215,000 won, buoyed by a freshly deepened partnership with Nvidia, yet a leveraged ETF tracking the same shares crashed 40% in the same session. The chaos has spurred an investigation by South Korea’s Financial Services Commission and landed three of the funds on a warning list.

The root of the ETF implosion lies in Monday’s closing auction. During that phase, market makers are not required to provide binding quotes, and liquidity evaporated. Unlimited buy orders slammed into the ACE SK Hynix Leveraged ETF, run by Korea Investment Management, sending it 50% higher and pushing its premium over net asset value to 86%. The next day, as the underlying stock recovered, the fund’s price corrected violently. Korea Investment Management acknowledged the lack of price quotations near the close and said it would review its internal systems. The Korea Exchange subsequently flagged three leveraged SK Hynix ETFs as risky investments, and the FSC is demanding stricter oversight of liquidity providers. Such extreme ETF price deviations are no longer a rarity: the exchange has logged 2,889 incidents this year, nearly three times the tally for the same period in 2024.

The fundamental story at SK Hynix, however, points in a different direction. The company has sealed a technology partnership with Nvidia that goes far beyond routine supply contracts. The two groups will jointly design custom memory solutions for Nvidia’s upcoming Vera Rubin supercomputers and Jetson Thor robotics platforms. Nvidia chief Jensen Huang underscored the relationship, calling SK Hynix its largest memory partner. On the production side, SK Hynix is integrating Nvidia’s AI libraries into its chip-design workflow and using digital twins on the Omniverse platform to push toward fully autonomous factories. The move aims to lock in a structural cost advantage in the fiercely competitive memory market.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

The stock’s gyrations reflect the tension between those long-term fundamentals and the wild swings in leveraged products. By Monday’s close, SK Hynix had already surged 182% year to date, after hitting a record high of around 2.4 million won. Tuesday’s 16% jump lifted the year-to-date advance to roughly 227%. Yet the correction has been sharp: the shares lost 19% in the week through Monday alone, and the 30-day volatility reading has touched nearly 99%, with annualized volatility at 90%.

The regulator’s focus on leveraged single-stock ETFs is unlikely to fade. The products have been drawing billions in capital while carrying deep structural risks, as Monday’s 86% premium and Tuesday’s 40% collapse made plain. For SK Hynix, the deeper integration into Nvidia’s ecosystem offers a buffer—early access to next-generation specifications and a strengthened market position. But with volatility near 100%, the stock remains a playground for speculators and a headache for regulators, even as the company’s strategic outlook grows more robust.
