Engineering conglomerate Smiths Group is executing a major strategic overhaul of its business portfolio, committing billions of pounds to reshape its future. The company's ambition to expand in the data center sector through acquisitions contrasts with an operational performance in the first half that fell short of analyst expectations for organic growth. This gap between strategic vision and current reality has recently weighed on the company's share price.

Financial Performance and Shareholder Returns

Despite the broader strategic moves, Smiths' shares faced pressure, closing down 2.07% at €26.46 on Friday. A 4.0% increase in organic revenue failed to fully satisfy market participants. On a positive note, profitability showed marked improvement: the operating margin expanded by 50 basis points to 17.2%. Earnings per share saw an organic increase of 8.4%, reaching 62 pence.

The company continues to emphasize shareholder returns. Following the completion of a buyback program in December, a new £1 billion share repurchase tranche is already underway. Additional shareholder details include:
* Ex-dividend date: 2 April 2026
* Dividend payment: 13 May 2026 (15 pence per share)
* Planned share buybacks through end of FY 2026: £600 million
* Medium-term organic growth target: 5% to 7%

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Smiths?

Management expressed optimism for the second half of the year, anticipating an acceleration in growth to a range of 3% to 4% for the full year. The operating margin for the continuing businesses is projected to reach the 20% threshold. CEO Roland Carter stated that these steps position Smiths to secure a long-term footing in higher-margin markets.

Reshaping the Business Through M&A

The company's transformation is being driven by simultaneous divestments and a targeted acquisition. Smiths has agreed to sell its Smiths Interconnect and Smiths Detection divisions. These sales, with a combined estimated value of £3.3 billion, are intended to bolster the balance sheet for future investments in lucrative markets. The divestiture of the Interconnect unit is nearing completion, while the sale of the Detection division is targeted for the second half of 2026.

Concurrently, Smiths is making a strategic purchase to capitalize on the data center boom. The group has agreed to acquire DRC Heat Transfer for £164 million. This move is designed to strengthen its Flex-Tek division and leverage rising demand for data center cooling technologies. The transaction is expected to be finalized in the third quarter of the 2026 financial year.
