Deutsche Telekom is pressing ahead on two fronts to shore up confidence in its stock: a management overhaul at its prized US subsidiary and a sustained share buyback that has already scooped up more than 19 million shares since April. The moves come as the stock trades within striking distance of its 2026 low, caught between a bullish analyst consensus and a stubbornly weak technical picture.

The most visible change is at T?Mobile US, the group's chief profit engine. Chris Sambar, a seasoned telecoms executive, has been promoted to the board and will take the reins of the corporate and government client division until mid?October 2026. The restructure also sees André Almeida add broadband expansion for residential customers to his marketing remit, while John Saw now oversees both network control and cybersecurity. Former product chief Mike Katz vacated his operating role on Wednesday but will remain as an adviser through year?end. The shake?up is designed to sharpen T?Mobile US's attack on the business segment and integrate artificial intelligence and 6G technology into its network.

Yet the market’s immediate reaction was subdued. Deutsche Telekom shares slipped 1.35% to €25.50 on Wednesday, and the following session they edged down a further 0.97% to €25.60. That leaves the stock less than 10% above its year?to?date low of €23.54, hit on 30 June. On a weekly basis, however, the shares have clawed back roughly 5%, reflecting some stabilisation after a protracted decline.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Analysts remain broadly upbeat. Bank of America rates T?Mobile US a “Buy”, dismissing fears that new satellite networks will disrupt the competitive landscape. Barclays trimmed its price target from €39.50 to €36.50 in early July but kept an “Overweight” rating, implying about 45% upside from current levels. The consensus target among covering analysts stands at €38.19, a clear vote of confidence in the telecom group’s long?term prospects.

The technical picture tells a more cautious story. The 50?day moving average sits at €27.45 and the 200?day at €28.72, both well above the spot price. The Relative Strength Index of 41.8 suggests neither oversold nor overbought territory, but rather a market waiting for a catalyst. From its 52?week high of €34.35, reached in February, the stock remains 25% lower. The broader weakness was triggered by rising interest?rate and inflation expectations linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, a headwind that has yet to fully recede.

Against that backdrop, insider buying has caught traders’ attention. Vorstandsmitglied Rodrigo Francisco Diehl purchased shares on both 30 June and 1 July, close to the year’s low – a move often interpreted as a signal of management’s faith in the business. Meanwhile, the company’s buyback programme continues apace: on the last day of June, Deutsche Telekom acquired 727,344 shares via XETRA at an average price of €24.79, bringing the total repurchased since the programme began in April to roughly 19.3 million shares.

The valuation is becoming increasingly compelling. At the current price, the stock trades on a forward P/E of 12.7 for 2026 and 11.3 for 2027, both well below the 10?year average of 17.8. The dividend yield has climbed to 4.4%, offering a decent income buffer. Whether that is enough to break the technical downtrend depends on a sustained move back above €26.00. The next major test comes in early August, when Deutsche Telekom reports quarterly results and executives are expected to flesh out their North American strategy, including the push into AI and 6G, alongside the costly fibre?optic rollout in Germany. Until then, the stock remains a tug?of?war between cheap fundamentals and chart resistance.
