Telekom Scores on Two Fronts as Quantum Mandate and World Cup Streaming Lift Sentiment
Published on 07/17/2026 at 22:31 | Redaktion boerse-global.deDeutsche Telekom entered the weekend on a high note after a double dose of positive catalysts: a European Union mandate to lead a pan-European quantum communications project and historic viewership numbers for the FIFA World Cup 2026 on its MagentaTV platform. The shares climbed 2.58 percent on Friday to âŹ27.39, adding to a weekly gain of 4.54 percent. Even so, the stock remains roughly 20 percent below its 52-week high of âŹ34.35 set in late February.
The EU tapped Telekom to spearhead the PETRUS2 project alongside Airbus, Thales and SES, targeting the construction of Europeâs cross-border quantum communication infrastructure known as EuroQCI. The news provided a clear lift to confidence, though the company has not quantified the financial impact of the initiative. At the same time, MagentaTV disclosed that the World Cup attracted more than 200 million viewers â nearly triple the 70 million who watched the 2024 European Championship â and that new subscriptions during the tournament doubled year-on-year. The streaming record underscores the value of sports content as a retention tool in Telekomâs core German market, a segment analysts regularly flag as a stabilising force.
The stockâs upward push came despite a technical correction to the companyâs ongoing buyback programme. Telekom issued a capital market announcement on Thursday confirming it had repurchased 1,412,830 of its own shares between 6 and 10 July at an average price of âŹ25.59 per share. The statement corrected earlier figures for that period but reaffirmed the tempo of the third tranche of the 2026 programme, which began on 1 July and targets up to âŹ560 million in repurchases by 30 September. Meanwhile, board member Rodrigo Francisco Diehl added to his personal stake in early July, buying 1,000 shares at âŹ24.15 as part of a series of insider purchases totalling roughly âŹ73,000.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
Analyst sentiment remains broadly constructive, albeit with some diverging views. UBS analyst Polo Tang reiterated a âBuyâ rating and a âŹ36.20 price target on 13 July, citing robust trends in both the German domestic operations and at T-Mobile US. JPMorgan held its âOverweightâ stance with a âŹ40 target on 10 July. Barclays, while maintaining its âOverweightâ call, trimmed its target from âŹ39.50 to âŹ36.50 on 2 July, pointing to increased competition in the US broadband market. On the US subsidiary itself, Bernstein Research cut its price target to $220 from $245, keeping a âMarket Performâ rating and citing the growing threat from Starlink in the fixed wireless segment.
The T-Mobile US unit continues to generate both strategic opportunity and headaches. Bloomberg reported that the carrier is migrating roughly 8 million legacy customers from older plans like Magenta, ONE and Simple Choice to more expensive 5G contracts, with monthly increases of up to $6 per line â a move that may draw short-term criticism but should bolster revenue over the medium term. Separately, T-Mobile US is reshuffling its management: former AT&T executive Chris Sambar will become its first Chief Enterprise Officer on 14 October. Back at the parent level, speculation about a full merger with T-Mobile US via a holding structure has met resistance from influential institutional investors. DJE Kapital and FPMâs Martin Wirth have publicly pushed back against the idea, which remains unconfirmed by the company.
Telekom is also quietly scaling its artificial intelligence ambitions. A pilot partnership with OpenAI for AI-driven customer service applications is moving into production mode, according to media reports. Investors will have a fuller picture of the groupâs performance when the second-quarter and first-half results land on 6 August, just a couple of weeks after T-Mobile US reports its own quarterly figures on 23 July.
