The 36% Slide That Puts Nebius's Wednesday Numbers Under a Microscope

The clock is ticking down to what could be the defining moment of Nebius's year. When the AI-cloud provider releases its second-quarter 2026 earnings on Wednesday, the market will be looking for one thing above all else: proof that a spending spree of historic proportions is actually generating cash, not just swelling a backlog.
The stock has already been voting with its feet. After touching an all-time high of €261.00 on 22 June, Nebius shares have tumbled 36.7% to Friday's close of €165.20. Monday brought some relief — a 6.59% bounce to €176.08 — but that still leaves the equity nursing a roughly 16.5% loss over the past 30 days. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 42.6, a neutral reading that leaves room for a move in either direction once the numbers hit the tape.
The $25 Billion Question
The heart of the bear case is simple: Nebius has raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to between $20 billion and $25 billion, yet much of that new capacity won't generate meaningful revenue until the first half of 2027. In the first quarter alone, the company spent $2.5 billion on capex. The market is now demanding tangible evidence that those dollars are converting into cash-generating infrastructure rather than just inflating a headline order book.
That order book is undeniably impressive. As of 31 March, remaining contract obligations stood at $33.59 billion, with 29% expected to convert into revenue within 24 months. First-quarter revenue hit $399 million, up 279.6% year-over-year, and management is guiding for $3 billion to $3.4 billion for the full year. The AI-cloud segment alone generated $389.7 million in the quarter, a 841% jump, and the annualized recurring revenue run rate is approaching $2 billion — with a year-end target of $7 billion to $9 billion.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nebius?
Bulls argue that the financing picture is equally solid. On 20 July, Nebius secured a secured credit facility of roughly $775 million led by MUFG, backed by already-installed GPU infrastructure. The company says customer cash flows combined with this facility cover more than 100% of its GPU investments. A new capital-light model is also gaining traction: infrastructure partners now own the data centers while Nebius provides the cloud platform, system architecture and sales. If that model scales, it could address exactly the balance-sheet risk that has spooked investors across the neocloud space.
The Meta Shadow and Insider Exodus
The sell-off isn't happening in a vacuum. A sector-wide de-risking of AI infrastructure names has been compounded by fears around Meta's plans to sell excess computing capacity. Evercore-ISI analyst Mark Mahaney estimates Meta could generate $10 billion to $20 billion in additional annual revenue from that move — a competitive threat that has weighed on Nebius repeatedly over the past month.
Insider selling has added to the anxiety. Regulatory filings show the CEO, CTO and chief infrastructure officer have together unloaded shares worth tens of millions of dollars in recent weeks. Over the past 90 days, total insider sales exceed $140 million. Short interest has climbed in parallel, rising from 50.93 million to 61.01 million shares — now representing 28.55% of the free float. With annualized 30-day volatility at 119.3%, the stock is primed for sharp moves on any catalyst.
What Wednesday Must Deliver
The technical picture offers little clear direction. The RSI of 42.6 sits in neutral territory, while the stock remains 36.31% above its 200-day moving average of €121.19 — a sign that the longer-term trend is still intact. The 100-day average at €159.14 marks a potential downside target if the correction deepens.
Nebius at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The key metrics for Wednesday's report will be the adjusted EBITDA margin — which management has warned will decline before recovering — and any updates on contracted power capacity relative to year-end targets. The market has moved past the stage where contract announcements alone drive enthusiasm; it now wants to see those contracts converting into cash flow.
For Nebius, the gap between a $33.59 billion backlog and a $165 stock price is the distance between promise and proof. Wednesday will show whether that gap is about to narrow or widen.
