The Bitcoin Trap: DeFi Technologies Posts $4.9M Profit While Stock Crashes 83%

Despite $4.9M Q1 profit and $87M cash, DeFi Technologies stock plunges 82% as Valour's crypto-linked business model amplifies market swings. Institutional pivot may offer hope.

DeFi Technologies: Strong Profits, but Stock Tied to Crypto Volatility

DeFi Technologies finds itself in a peculiar standoff between operational strength and market perception. The company generated nearly $5 million in net profit during the first quarter and holds $87 million in cash reserves, yet its stock has shed over 80% of its value in the past twelve months. The culprit? A business model that ties its fortunes almost exclusively to the crypto market's mood swings.

The shares closed Friday at €0.47, clawing back about 9% from the year's low of €0.41 hit on June 25. But that modest uptick does little to mask a brutal downturn: the stock has fallen 82.81% over the past year and sits 84.81% below the July 2025 peak of €2.98. Those losses track a broader crypto rout that pushed Bitcoin below $63,000 and wiped 48% off the total crypto market capitalization, now at roughly $2.46 trillion. In May alone, $2.43 billion exited US spot Bitcoin ETFs — the heaviest monthly outflow this year.

Valour Drives the Engine, and the Drag

The company’s main operating arm, Valour, issues exchange-traded products that mirror digital assets. That business generated soaring fee income in Q1, fuelling the $4.9 million net profit. Valour also expanded its global footprint: it launched new crypto products in Brazil and now lists selected funds directly on the London Stock Exchange. On the surface, the operational story is one of growth.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DeFi Technologies?

Yet because Valour’s revenue scales directly with assets under management — and those AUM move in lockstep with crypto prices — the stock behaves like a leveraged proxy for Bitcoin sentiment. The 30-day annualised volatility stands at 66.06%, confirming a high-beta instrument. Over the past week, the shares gained 3.2%, but that relief is fragile: the 30-day return is minus 7.6% and the year-to-date loss swells to 39.49%.

Management is now steering toward institutional capital. At the annual general meeting in late June, the board greenlit a strategic realignment aimed at attracting hedge funds and regulated investment vehicles. The company believes that tapping deeper pools of liquidity will stabilise the share price and reduce its wild correlation with crypto day-to-day moves.

Technicals Signal Exhaustion, Not a Turnaround

The chart tells a story of persistent weakness. The 50-day moving average sits at €0.55, the 100-day at €0.57, and the 200-day at €0.87 — all well above the current price. The relative strength index (RSI) reads 40.2, neutral territory that implies neither a panic sell-off nor a nascent recovery. For a sustained bullish signal, the stock would need to reclaim the €0.55 level.

Analysts remain optimistic despite the carnage. Benchmark reiterates a buy rating with a $2.00 target, while Compass Point keeps an equivalent rating at $1.45. Their conviction hinges on the institutional pivot delivering tangible results in the second half of the year. For now, though, the company’s fate depends less on its own execution than on whether Bitcoin and ETF flows can find a floor. As long as Valour’s products mirror digital assets, DeFi Technologies shares will rise and fall with the broader crypto tide — amplifying every twist along the way.
