Thyssenkrupp’s €10.46 Gloss Masks a Gathering Storm of Structural Headwinds

Thyssenkrupp shares trade at €10.46 above the 200-day MA as a German navy order and EU steel tariffs offer support, but unfinished restructuring and high costs keep investors cautious ahead of August's AGM.

The stock is holding above a key moving average, but beneath the surface lies a tangle of competing forces. Thyssenkrupp’s shares changed hands at €10.46 on Wednesday, comfortably above the 200-day simple moving average of €10.00 — a level that technicians often regard as the dividing line between a bull and bear trend. Yet the fact that the price has drifted only marginally north of that line tells its own story: optimism exists, but it is cautious and conditional.

A €11.6 billion order for new frigates from the German navy provides a welcome financial cushion, but it does nothing to resolve the conglomerate’s deeper problems. The same can be said for the European Union’s freshly tightened steel-import regime, which came into force on 30 June 2026. The new rules cap duty-free shipments at 18.3 million tonnes and double the tariff on any overhang from 25% to 50%. While this should relieve some pricing pressure from cheap imports, the global surplus of steel continues to swell — from 620 million tonnes this year to a projected 720 million tonnes by 2027.

Investors are therefore focusing on the things that management can actually control. The restructuring of the steel division remains unfinished, with the sale of the Hüttenwerke Krupp-Mannesmann (HKM) stake to Salzgitter still hanging in the balance. At the same time, Goldman Sachs has trimmed its price target for the hydrogen subsidiary Thyssenkrupp Nucera to €8.60, keeping a “neutral” rating. Analysts point to weak revenue in Nucera’s chlor-alkali segment, a drag that weighs on the parent company’s overall valuation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Thyssenkrupp?

On the positive side of the ledger, the board has given the green light to spin off tk accelis, and a new robotics alliance with GlobalLogic signals that the group is serious about pivoting toward technology. The annual general meeting on 7 August and the third-quarter report on 13 August will be the key test. Shareholders will expect a clear timetable for the tk accelis separation and evidence that the tech partnerships are beginning to generate tangible results.

What could go wrong? The biggest risk is Germany’s cost base. Domestic production expenses are roughly 50% above the global average, with energy costs running three to four times higher. If the EU tariffs push domestic steel prices too high, demand could simply collapse, negating the protective effect. Internal resistance to the steel spin-off might also emerge before the AGM, rattling investors in a stock that already carries an annualised volatility of nearly 43%.

Short-term, the technical picture is stable as long as the share price defends the 200-day line. Slipping below the 100-day moving average at €9.96 would change the narrative entirely. For now, the market is giving the management the benefit of the doubt — but August will demand answers, not just promises.
