The Chinese humanoid robotics specialist Ubtech Robotics is navigating a starkly divided narrative. On one side, its industrial business is scaling rapidly, fueled by a landmark deal in South Korea and a staggering 2,203.7% revenue jump in its humanoid segment. On the other, a regulatory clampdown on emotional AI services has cast a shadow over the company's consumer debut, wiping more than HK$20 billion (US$2.56 billion) from its market value.

South Korea Auto Deal Marks Industrial Breakthrough

Ubtech has signed a memorandum of understanding with South Korean auto parts manufacturer AJIN Industrial and Duksan JM Robotics to establish what would be the country's first production line fully reliant on humanoid robots for vehicle components. The pilot project, set to launch in August 2026 at AJIN's Manufacturing Innovation Factory, will deploy two core models: the wheel-driven Cruzr Y1 and the bipedal Walker S2.

The Walker S2 is already undergoing testing at a Tier-1 automotive supplier, operating under real factory conditions rather than in a laboratory. This marks a critical transition from prototype to practical application in the demanding automotive supply chain.

Industrial Segment Delivers Exponential Growth

The South Korean push aligns with Ubtech's accelerating industrial momentum. Revenue from full-sized humanoid robots reached 820.6 million yuan in 2025, a 2,203.7% surge from the prior year, representing 41.1% of total group revenue. Cumulative deliveries hit 1,079 units, with an order backlog of nearly 1.4 billion yuan.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ubtech Robotics?

The broader group posted 53.3% revenue growth to 2.001 billion yuan for 2025. Net losses narrowed roughly 32% to 789.8 million yuan, down from 1.16 billion yuan a year earlier. Analysts now project 2026 revenue of around 3.69 billion yuan and expect the company to turn profitable by 2027.

Ubtech is also scaling production capacity. The Walker S2 has already reached 1,000 units in output, with plans to boost annual capacity to 10,000 by 2026 in partnership with Siemens. Automotive clients include BYD, Geely, and FAW-Volkswagen. The industrial lineup is rounded out by the Cruzr Y1, which offers autonomous navigation, dual-arm manipulation, and a vertical lift function with over four hours of battery life.

Consumer Ambitions Hit Regulatory Roadblocks

The timing of Ubtech's consumer push could hardly have been worse. On June 30, the company unveiled its companion robot, the U1, which quickly amassed around 13,000 pre-orders worth approximately US$305 million. But just two weeks later, China's "Interim Measures for Anthropomorphic Interactive AI Services" took effect on July 15, banning addictive mechanisms in emotional AI applications, requiring risk warnings, and mandating an opt-out right for users. Minors are now prohibited from interacting with virtual "relatives" or romantic AI partners.

The new rules triggered an immediate industry response. Providers Doubao and Tongyi Qianwen suspended their customizable AI agents on the same day, while Tencent Yuanbao had already done so in late June. Shanghai's internet regulator removed over 14,000 non-compliant AI agents from the web.

For Ubtech, the regulatory headwinds compound existing challenges. The U1 lacks the 3C certification standard for Chinese consumer electronics, and its battery life ranges from just two to four hours depending on the model. Final payments for initial orders were due by July 16, adding pressure to deliver on commitments. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology expects roughly 100,000 humanoid robots to be shipped nationwide this year, meaning Ubtech must navigate stricter compliance requirements as it competes for market share.

Walker Fleet Expands Beyond Consumer Markets

Away from the consumer spotlight, Ubtech continues to advance its service robotics. The Walker C1 drew attention at the Chain Expo 2026 by performing ballet alongside human dancers. Designed for hotels and airports, the model handles multilingual reception and information duties.

Stock Remains Under Pressure

Despite the operational milestones, the share price tells a different story. Ubtech shares trade at around €9.41, down 34.65% year-to-date and more than 19% over the past 30 days. The stock sits well below its January high of €17.00 — a 44.34% decline — though it has bounced slightly from the 52-week low of €8.91 recorded in mid-July. The annualized 30-day volatility stands at 80.79%, underscoring the speculative nature of the humanoid robotics sector.

With a market capitalization of roughly €4.60 billion, Ubtech finds itself caught between soaring industrial demand and the sobering realities of regulatory risk and consumer market uncertainty. The South Korea proof-of-concept project will be a key test of whether the company can translate its factory-floor ambitions into sustained commercial success.
