UK Emergency Services Ramp Up Joint Response to Wildfires and Arson

Emergency services across the United Kingdom are strengthening their collaborative response to a surge in wildfires and deliberate arson, with police and fire officials warning that a unified strategy is essential to tackle both environmental damage and criminal behaviour.

On July 18, police and fire chiefs stressed that tackling the growing number of incidents requires close coordination between law enforcement, fire services, and community organisations. The warning comes as major blazes continue to burn across multiple regions, stretching resources and prompting criminal charges.

Charges and Arrests After Moorland Fires

Greater Manchester Police have brought criminal charges following significant fires at Dovestone and Swineshaw moorlands, which have collectively burned approximately 885 hectares of land — an area equivalent to roughly 1,250 football pitches.

Shania Care-Slede, 20, was charged on July 18 with arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered and dangerous driving. She has been bailed to appear at Manchester Crown Court on August 18. Two other individuals — a 19-year-old woman and a man in his 20s — were arrested on suspicion of arson and have also been released on bail.

The Dovestone fire began on July 11. Amid ongoing firefighting operations, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service issued an urgent plea after members of the public were observed lighting barbecues near the active blaze. Emergency responders from Derbyshire, South Wales, Lancashire, and Hereford & Worcester have provided national resilience support to contain the situation.

Cairngorms and Derbyshire: Progress and Ongoing Risks

In Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service reported significant progress on July 18 in containing a wildfire near Ryvoan Bothy in the Cairngorms. The fire, which started on July 15, has covered approximately six square kilometres and destroyed 300 hectares of the RSPB Loch Garten reserve. More than 100 firefighters, assisted by helicopters and high-volume pumps drawing water from Loch Morlich, have been deployed to the scene.

While evacuations were previously carried out in Glenmore Forest Park, Abernethy, and Loch Morlich, officials confirmed that Aviemore is no longer considered to be in the immediately affected area. However, the wildfire risk in the region is expected to remain very high through at least Monday.

In Derbyshire, firefighting efforts at Tintwistle Moor are projected to continue into next week. This fire, which began in late June, has merged with blazes at Saddleworth and Swineshaw. The operation has required the closure of the A628 Woodhead Pass and the use of two helicopters for water drops. Officials warned that smoke from these merged fires may affect Derbyshire communities early next week.

North Yorkshire: Preventative Strategy Takes Shape

North Yorkshire Police Chief Constable Tim Forber has highlighted a multi-agency responsibility for tackling the rise in fires caused by both deliberate acts and careless behaviour. A joint problem-solving plan is now in effect, involving police, fire services, and local authorities.

The strategy includes targeted patrols to increase monitoring of high-risk areas, a reinstated Fire Safe Intervention programme that has already seen more than 20 referrals, and monthly coordination meetings dedicated to addressing fires linked to anti-social behaviour.

In a separate enforcement action earlier this week, police and partners in Scarborough — including North Yorkshire Council and Beyond Housing — secured a closure order for a property in Briercliffe following reports of criminal activity. Meanwhile, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue crews used thermal imaging technology on July 18 to monitor a woodland fire at Sand Hutton, ensuring no hotspots remained in the peat after the public extinguished the initial flames.
