A simple hard cap, not a portfolio manager’s instinct, has reshuffled the top holdings of VanEck’s flagship dividend ETF. Exxon Mobil’s weight crept above five percent of the portfolio, triggering an automatic reduction that vaulted Verizon Communications into the lead. The index’s strict methodology left no room for discretion: when a single stock breaks the ceiling, it gets cut — mechanically, immediately.

The VanEck Morningstar Developed Markets Dividend Leaders ETF now trades at €52.10, roughly eight percent higher since the start of the year and up nearly 24 percent over twelve months. That rally has lifted assets under management past $8 billion, an eightfold increase in just twelve months. The fund’s previous high of around €53 is now just a few percentage points away.

Dividends, Not Market Cap, Decide the Weight

Unlike conventional indices that rank by market capitalisation, this one uses a dividend-dollar weighting system. The larger the absolute dollar amount a company pays out, the bigger its place in the portfolio. That principle has put Verizon at the top with a 4.64 percent allocation, followed by TotalEnergies and Nestlé.

To qualify for inclusion, a company must not have cut its dividend per share over the past five years, and its expected payout ratio must stay below 75 percent. From that screened universe, the index picks the 100 stocks offering the highest yields.

Financials dominate the portfolio at 31 percent, with energy close behind at 20 percent. The United States accounts for roughly a quarter of positions — far less than in typical developed?market benchmarks — while the United Kingdom and France round out the top three country exposures.

A Record Inflow and a New Sibling

The strategy’s rigid discipline has drawn massive capital. Morningstar reaffirmed its highest rating in May. The fund charges an annual fee of 0.38 percent, slightly above a rival Vanguard product but still competitive for active?income seekers.

Meanwhile, VanEck has expanded its dividend family. In April it launched TDVX, a sister ETF listed in London and Frankfurt that applies the same index rules but excludes all US stocks. The new fund accumulates income rather than distributing it, giving European investors a choice between the original Dutch?domiciled TDIV — which offers tax advantages for local holders but no automatic reinvestment — and a fully accumulating version. TDVX has gathered roughly $10 million since launch.

Steady Income, Next Payment Due

The ETF has paid a dividend every year for the past decade. Over the last twelve months it distributed €1.65 per share, and management expects the same figure for the coming year. The current yield stands at 3.17 percent. The next payout is scheduled for September.

With Verizon now holding the top spot and a hard cap keeping single?stock concentration in check, the fund heads into the second half carrying its low?cost, rule?driven approach — and a younger sibling that lets yield?seekers sidestep American exposure entirely.
