Voestalpine's Pivot: A Billion-Euro Aerospace Deal and a New Dividend Promise

Voestalpine is closing its financial year with a powerful one-two punch, combining a landmark aerospace contract with a clarified shareholder returns policy. The Austrian steel and technology group has secured its largest-ever aerospace order package, a five-year deal worth approximately one billion euros, while simultaneously preparing to implement a new dividend framework that promises greater predictability for investors.

The aerospace agreement, centered on Voestalpine's High Performance Metals Division, involves supplying Airbus with nickel-based alloys and forged components for the A320, A330, and A350 aircraft families. These critical parts, used in structures, engines, and landing gear, will be manufactured at the company's sites in Kapfenberg and Mürzzuschlag, Austria, and at its Brazilian subsidiary Villares Metals. This deal capitalizes on the structural demand for short- and medium-haul aircraft, reinforcing aerospace alongside rail infrastructure as a core growth pillar for the group.

Financially, the company enters this pivotal period from a position of strength. For the first nine months of the 2025/26 fiscal year, Voestalpine reported EBITDA of one billion euros, a 7.2 percent increase year-over-year, despite a slight revenue dip to 11.1 billion euros. Operational improvements are clear: net financial debt was reduced by 27.4 percent to 1.4 billion euros, equity climbed to 7.6 billion euros, and free cash flow turned strongly positive at 345 million euros.

This robust operational performance directly supports the new dividend model set for its debut. The policy commits to a payout of 30 percent of earnings per share, provided the group's net debt-to-EBITDA ratio remains below 2.0. The upcoming annual general meeting on July 1 will see shareholders cast their final vote on the first distribution under these rules.

Investors have already rewarded the company's trajectory, with Voestalpine's share price doubling over the past year, posting a gain of roughly 102 percent. The stock currently trades at 42.60 euros, holding firmly above its 200-day moving average of 35.15 euros.

Challenges persist, notably from U.S. import tariffs of up to 50 percent on specialty tubes, which are projected to cost the company up to 80 million euros this year. The impact is partially mitigated by local production at its 49 North American sites. Concurrently, Voestalpine is advancing its green transformation. Construction of its first electric arc furnace in Linz, a 1.5-billion-euro project, is on schedule for a shell completion in April. The facility is slated to begin delivering CO2-reduced steel from February 2027.

Management's full-year guidance anticipates EBITDA between 1.4 and 1.55 billion euros. The complete annual report for 2025/26 will be published on June 3, offering the next concrete indicator of whether the strong momentum in aerospace, rail, and logistics can be sustained through the final quarter.
