Voestalpine shares surge, defying sector trends. Strong financials, strategic shift to high-margin segments, and a successful capital raise for green steel fuel analyst optimism and a €50 price target.

Shares in Austrian steel and technology group Voestalpine surged over four percent on Friday, leading the ATX index and extending a monthly gain to nearly ten percent. This performance starkly contrasts with broader pressure on European industrial stocks and specific struggles at rivals like Thyssenkrupp, which recently saw its price target cut by Barclays.

The divergence highlights Voestalpine's robust operational setup, with its stock trading stably above the €41 mark. Analyst confidence is building, underscored by recent endorsements from major investment banks. Barclays Capital analyst Tom Zhang reaffirmed an 'Overweight' rating with a €50 price target, implying roughly 20 percent upside. Simultaneously, Citi raised its target to €45, citing strong confidence in the company's current trajectory.

This optimism is rooted in solid financials. For the first three quarters, Voestalpine demonstrated impressive efficiency: while revenue dipped slightly to €11.1 billion, EBITDA climbed to around €1 billion and pre-tax profit jumped by nearly half. The company's strategic pivot towards higher-margin segments, such as aerospace and railway infrastructure, is clearly paying off.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Voestalpine?

The strong cash generation provides a defensive business mix and reduces perceived risks associated with its ambitious transition to green steel production from 2027. To fund this transformation, management has proactively bolstered its financial base. In mid-April, the company successfully upsized an existing convertible bond due 2028. Institutional investors subscribed at an issue price of over 118 percent of par value, bringing in a gross proceeds figure in the double-digit millions.

This latest €35 million top-up brings the total framework for this bond issue to €285 million, securing ample liquidity for upcoming investment phases. The capital strengthens Voestalpine's hand as it pursues major contracts, including recent significant orders from Airbus in the aerospace sector.

Looking ahead, the company's earnings potential appears significant. Barclays projects a sharp earnings per share (EPS) acceleration in the coming years: €2.17 for 2025/26, jumping to €3.64 in 2026/27, and reaching €4.02 by 2027/28. Dividend payments are forecast to rise in step from €0.70 to €1.20 over the same period.

The board will present full annual figures on June 3, 2026. Management is targeting a full-year EBITDA of at least €1.4 billion. Given sustained demand in its niche markets, the company is positioned to comfortably meet this goal, supported by a fortified balance sheet and clear analyst backing.
