Vulcan Energy has started to tap the financing behind Lionheart, turning a long-planned lithium and geothermal build-out in the Upper Rhine Valley into an active project. On 15 July 2026, the company confirmed receipt of the first strategic capital calls from its funding partners. A day later, it said the first drawdown had begun from the €2.2 billion package that closed at the end of May.

The financing structure combines debt, equity and public support, and it is intended to underpin both the lithium project and renewable energy output in Germany. The company said the first cash tranche marks a shift from funding commitments to execution of the construction programme for the geothermal and lithium value chain at the Oberrheingraben. White & Case advised Vulcan Energy on the transaction, while Clifford Chance advised the investor side. Backers include Siemens Financial Services, HOCHTIEF and Demeter.

Lionheart is designed to produce 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate a year, enough for around 500,000 electric-vehicle batteries. Vulcan Energy also plans annual output of 275 gigawatt hours of green power and 560 gigawatt hours of heat for the region. The planned operating life is 30 years. The company says additional capital calls will follow as further milestones are reached.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?

Operationally, the project appears to be gathering pace. Vulcan said Lionheart construction activity has now reached full scale. It has also secured a Phase-One financing package, put a 2.6 billion US dollar financing sum in place for the lithium project, signed a contract for a geothermal power plant and obtained a building permit for a lithium plant in Frankfurt. Roberto Gallardo has also joined Vulcan Energy’s management board.

The latest funding news has so far done little for the share price. Vulcan Energy closed on Thursday at EUR 1.70, only just above its 52-week low of EUR 1.65. In the secondary article, that low was recorded on 13 July 2026, and the stock was said to be 3.14 percent above it. The primary article described the same close as leaving the shares just above the 52-week low and added that the stock had fallen by more than a fifth over the past 30 days and by almost 35 percent since the start of the year.

Technical indicators still point to pressure on the chart. The stock sits 34 percent below its 200-day average of EUR 2.58, while the 50-day average stands at EUR 2.07, leaving the shares 17.42 percent below that level. The RSI of 34.8 suggests the stock is approaching oversold territory, but not yet signaling a clear reversal.

For now, Vulcan Energy’s project delivery and its market valuation are moving in opposite directions. The funding is in place, the first money is flowing and construction is advancing, yet investors have not rewarded the progress. The question is whether the next drawdowns and building milestones will finally give the share price a reason to catch up.
