Vulcan Energy has locked down €2.2 billion in financing for its flagship Lionheart lithium project, yet the market is treating the milestone as cold comfort. Shares touched a new 52-week low of €1.73 on Thursday before closing at €1.80–€1.81, extending a year?to?date decline of roughly 31%. The equity now trades more than 54% below the 52-week high of €3.98 set in October 2025.

The funding package, announced in early June and comprising €1.185 billion in debt from the European Investment Bank and a consortium of 13 lenders, alongside €204 million in German state grants and a €150 million equity injection from the KfW raw materials fund, was supposed to remove the biggest risk hanging over the developer. Construction is now fully under way at the two phase?one sites: Landau, where geothermal and lithium extraction units are being built, and Frankfurt?Höchst, home to the central lithium processing plant that will convert lithium chloride into battery?grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate.

Yet the share price has continued to drift lower. The 14?day relative strength index sits at 36.4–37.3, flirting with oversold territory but failing to trigger a meaningful bounce. The stock is roughly 15% below its 50?day moving average of €2.13 and more than 30% beneath the 200?day average of €2.59. Annualised volatility of over 54% reflects the market’s persistent nervousness about execution risk, despite the balance?sheet certainty.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?

Analysts point to a disconnect between operational progress and valuation. Investors want ongoing proof that commercial production will indeed start in 2028, the target the company continues to affirm. The technical picture offers no clear trend reversal signal, and the gulf between the current price and the highs of last autumn underscores how much confidence has been eroded over the past several months.

To counter that scepticism, Vulcan Energy has already secured four long?term offtake agreements covering a substantial portion of its planned 24,000?tonne annual capacity of lithium hydroxide monohydrate. Stellantis has committed to 128,000 tonnes over ten years, Glencore to 36,000–44,000 tonnes over eight, LG Energy Solution to 31,000 tonnes over six, and Umicore to 23,000 tonnes over six. These contracts tie major battery makers and commodity traders directly to the project’s future output, providing a revenue floor that is independent of near?term spot lithium prices.

The next major catalyst arrives on 30 July 2026, when Vulcan Energy publishes its quarterly report — the first detailed update since the financing was closed. The market will scrutinise capital expenditure figures and any changes to the timeline for transitioning from construction to commercial operation. If management can show the budget and schedule remain on track, the stock could finally break away from the broader lithium sector’s headwinds. If doubts persist about the pace of work at Landau and Frankfurt?Höchst, the pressure on the equity is likely to continue.
