Western Digital's 103% Volatility Masks a Fundamentally Sound AI Storage Play — For Now

Western Digital rallies 790% in a year but falls 28% from highs. Strong earnings and AI-driven demand clash with supply-chain fears and technical risks.

The numbers tell two conflicting stories about Western Digital. On one hand, the storage giant has delivered a jaw-dropping 790% gain over the past twelve months, with shares still up 212% since January. On the other, the stock has shed 28% from its 52-week high of €696.30, hit on June 18, and ended last week at exactly €500 — a level that feels less like a floor than a temporary resting place.

Friday's 5.99% bounce offered some relief, but the weekly close remained marginally in the red. The correction accelerated in early July after reports emerged that Apple is exploring partnerships with Chinese memory makers CXMT and YMTC, reigniting fears of supply-chain disruption in the very segment that has powered Western Digital's rally. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index's dramatic deviation from its long-term trend has analysts whispering about dot-com comparisons, and the stock's annualized volatility now stands at nearly 103%.

Yet beneath the surface-level turbulence, Western Digital's operating engine is firing on all cylinders. In its fiscal third quarter, the company reported adjusted earnings per share of $2.72 on revenue that climbed 45% year-over-year, fueled by demand from cloud, consumer, and enterprise customers. Gross margins breached the 50% threshold — precisely the level management has targeted — and the company used its improved cash position to hike the quarterly dividend by 20%, launch a multibillion-dollar share buyback, and flip from net debt to net cash. It also introduced what it calls the industry's first post-quantum encrypted hard drives for hyperscale clients.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Western Digital?

The strategic outlook reinforces that strength. Management expects exabyte volumes to grow by more than 25% annually over the next three to five years, driven by AI workloads that demand high-margin NAND solutions. The stated goal is a free cash flow margin approaching 30%. For now, the production backlog is effectively sold out: hyperscalers have locked in capacity so aggressively that inventories are bare.

Wall Street's response to the quarterly report was broadly euphoric. Several bulge-bracket banks raised their price targets, with BofA analyst Wamsi Mohan lifting his to $732 while maintaining a buy rating. Other targets climbed as high as $685. But not everyone is convinced the rally has room to run. Fox Advisors downgraded the stock to "Equal Weight," arguing that expectations for future hard-drive pricing have already overshot reality.

The divergence between bullish long-term fundamentals and jittery short-term sentiment is most visible in the technical picture. The stock now trades roughly 7% above its 50-day moving average of €468. A break below that level could open the door to a slide toward the 200-day line at €254 — a drop of nearly 50% from Friday's close. The next catalyst comes Tuesday, July 7, when Samsung Electronics releases preliminary second-quarter results. As the dominant player in memory, Samsung's numbers will set the tone not just for its own stock but for the entire storage complex, including Western Digital.

Western Digital's own quarterly report is due at the end of July. Investors will scrutinise margin trends and any signs that the recent supply-chain shifts are eating into profitability. For a stock that has tripled in less than a year and now carries an annualized volatility in triple digits, the window for "easy money" in AI infrastructure has clearly closed. Whether €500 holds or cracks will determine whether the current pullback is a healthy reset or the beginning of a deeper reevaluation of the premiums priced into semiconductor plays.
