With Orders Flowing but Shares Sinking, Aixtron's Half-Year Report Takes Centre Stage

Aixtron shares fall over a third from peak, but order book grows with AI and power semiconductor clients. Analysts split ahead of July 30 earnings report.

Aixtron has become a tale of two narratives in recent weeks. Its order book is stacking up with blue-chip clients from Lumentum to ROHM Semiconductor, yet the stock has shed more than a third of its value in a single month. At €39.44, the shares now trade 37% below the 52-week peak of €62.68 reached on June 18, leaving the market to wonder whether the slide is a buying opportunity or the start of a deeper reckoning.

The sharp correction prompted mwb research to upgrade the MOCVD equipment maker from "Sell" to "HOLD" on July 20. The firm framed the move as a response to the already completed price adjustment rather than a conviction that the stock is poised to rebound. The Relative Strength Index at 34.1 reinforces the case for near-term stabilization, signalling oversold conditions that often precede a bounce.

Other analysts had struck a more optimistic tone just weeks earlier. Jefferies raised its price target to €73.00 on June 23, reiterating a "Buy" rating and pointing to Aixtron's capacity build-out in optoelectronics. Warburg Research that same day lifted its target from €23.50 to €56.00, though it maintained a "Hold" stance. Those evaluations now sit far above the current price, but the subsequent sell-off has made the targets look aspirational rather than imminent.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aixtron?

The operational side of the story, however, remains robust. Lumentum ordered multiple G10-AsP MOCVD systems in May to expand capacity for high-speed optical components used in AI networks. ROHM Semiconductor earlier adopted Aixtron's G10-GaN platform for power semiconductor production, and the MIT Lincoln Laboratory purchased two 300-mm Hyperion systems in June for gallium nitride and 2D materials research. The breadth of these applications — spanning photonics, power electronics, and advanced research — underscores a demand base that stretches well beyond any single end market.

Management's own outlook backs that picture. In April, the company raised its full-year 2026 revenue forecast to between €530 million and €590 million, with EBIT margin guidance of 17% to 20%. To finance the growth, Aixtron issued €450 million in convertible bonds that same month, and shareholders approved a €0.15 dividend for fiscal 2025 at the May annual general meeting.

The stock's technical picture offers a split verdict. While the 30-day decline of 34.09% has pushed short-term momentum firmly into the red, the shares remain above the 200-day moving average — a sign that the longer-term uptrend, which has delivered average annual returns of 27.7% over the past decade, is still technically intact. A risk-rating service nonetheless flagged the shares as high-risk given the recent volatility.

Everything now hinges on July 30, when Aixtron publishes its half-year financial report for the first six months of 2026. The accompanying analyst conference call will give management a platform to detail how the recent flurry of orders has translated into backlog and revenue, and whether the revised annual guidance is on track. For investors debating whether the sell-off went too far, the interim numbers will either validate the contrarian case or reveal a gap between order flow and earnings reality that still needs to close.
