Woodworking to Alpine Rescue: German Industry Goes All-In on XR for Ergonomics and Training

A new workshop in Löningen aims to change how carpenters and joiners work with their bodies. Opened on June 12, 2026, the demonstration space displays practical solutions for reducing physical strain in the trade — from lifting techniques to workspace layout. The initiative, launched by TSD and Buckoptimale, underscores a broader push to integrate virtual and augmented reality into workplace health.
That push extends far beyond the woodshop. One central project, ErgoMobileXR, was developed by MindConsole GmbH together with the AUVA (Austrian Workers' Compensation Board). Using Meta Quest headsets, the system trains employees in ergonomic movements through virtual environments. Motion-capture data highlights both correct and incorrect postures when lifting and carrying. The next iteration will incorporate live body tracking, using machine learning and the REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment) score to evaluate posture in real time. Interfaces are planned to feed this data directly into company management systems.
For jobs that involve a lot of walking, the ergoWalker is already available. This mobile tool relieves strain on the musculoskeletal system and also supports reintegration after illness.

Digital planning tools are entering the design phase, too. Augmented-reality software such as Gravity Sketch allows designers to evaluate 3D models at actual scale within real environments, reducing the need for physical prototypes and embedding ergonomic thinking earlier in the process. A similar logic drives the project ALPINE-XR, which since January 2026 has been improving the training of alpine rescue personnel using extended reality and insights from neuroscience.
The market for such technologies is growing fast. Deloitte projects the European smart-manufacturing market will climb from approximately US$69.87 billion in 2026 to over US$123 billion by 2031. Around 85 percent of manufacturers consider intelligent production technologies essential for boosting productivity. Yet nearly half of companies say they cannot find the skilled workers needed to run these new systems.
Hardware advances are keeping pace. Samsung has announced the Galaxy XR headset will go on sale in the United Kingdom on July 8, 2026. Equipped with 4K Micro-OLED displays and a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor, it provides the computing power needed for complex real-time simulations.
Longer-term research is also underway. The HistoVeaR project, funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the EU until May 2028, explores AI-supported reconstructions in VR. The techniques developed for real-time simulation show promise for future workplace applications. Separately, a collaboration between ABB Robotics and Psyonic uses movement data from prosthetics to make robots more adept in logistics and automotive manufacturing.
