A €9 Billion Dividend ETF Edges Toward Its Record as Banks and Oil Giants Feed the Rally

The quiet rotation out of technology and into income-generating strategies is gathering pace, and few vehicles are capturing it as neatly as the VanEck Morningstar Developed Markets Dividend Leaders UCITS ETF. The fund, which tracks the 100 highest-yielding large-cap stocks from developed markets, closed Tuesday at €55.32 on the Frankfurt exchange — a whisker's breadth of 0.61 percent below its 52-week peak of €55.66, touched on August 4.
That narrow gap to the high masks a broader story of what is propelling the fund: a synchronized burst of buyback activity, upward earnings revisions, and a portfolio construction that leans heavily on two sectors currently in favor. Financials account for roughly 42.4 percent of net assets, with energy adding another 15.6 percent. Health care (11.4 percent) and consumer goods (10.3 percent) round out a defensive tilt that keeps the fund's annualized 30-day volatility at a remarkably low 7.83 percent.
Buybacks and Upgrades: A Two-Pronged Catalyst
The most concrete support has come from share repurchases. TotalEnergies disclosed it bought back 1.67 million of its own shares between August 3 and 7, a tranche worth approximately €125 million. The move did not go unnoticed: Erste Group Bank responded by lifting its full-year 2026 earnings-per-share estimate for the French energy major to $10.87 — a figure sitting comfortably above the prevailing analyst consensus.
The buyback theme extends well beyond the energy patch. Intesa Sanpaolo, the Italian lender, scooped up roughly 8.57 million of its own shares in the same August window, valued at about €58.39 million. Since the program's launch in July, the bank has already retired 0.75 percent of its share capital.
On the earnings side, BNP Paribas delivered a quarter that beat expectations with room to spare. The French bank earned $2.16 per share against the $1.92 analysts had penciled in, prompting Erste Group to raise its 2026 profit estimate for the lender to $6.66 per share. BNP has also confirmed an interim dividend of €3.23 per share, scheduled for payout on September 28 — precisely the kind of dependable distribution the fund's screening methodology is built to capture.
Corporate News Flow Adds Texture
Beyond the numbers, a stream of corporate developments has kept the fund's heavyweight holdings in the headlines. Rio Tinto goes ex-dividend on August 13, with reports suggesting the Australian government may offer financial relief on the steep energy costs facing the miner's Tomago aluminium smelter. In telecoms, Verizon Communications unveiled a $25,000 reward program aimed at combating network vandalism in Southern California, alongside a backend update designed to bolster the reliability of its home internet services.
A Defensive Profile With Momentum
The fund's appeal lies in its construction: it filters for sustainability and financial stability before selecting the highest-yielding names, a discipline that has served it well through a period of elevated interest rates and resilient bank margins. Year-to-date, the ETF is up 15.15 percent, while the 12-month return stands at 25.43 percent. A 14-day relative strength index of 65.6 points to strong momentum that has yet to tip into overbought territory.
With assets under management exceeding €9 billion and a total expense ratio of 0.38 percent, the fund has become a default choice for investors seeking yield outside the US market. The next test arrives with the BNP Paribas payout on September 28 — a moment that will show whether the current wave of dividend strength carries genuine operational substance behind it.
