Adidas Finds a Fresh Audience in the Pet Aisle as US Consumers Shift Allegiance

The German sportswear giant is betting that the emotional pull of club football extends to four-legged fans. On Wednesday, Adidas launched its "Clubs Pet Collection" — officially licensed kits and accessories for pets, developed in partnership with some of Europe's biggest football institutions, including Real Madrid, Arsenal, Juventus and FC Bayern Munich. The move targets a growing cohort of supporters who want their animals dressed in team colours, adding a niche but brand-reinforcing segment to the company's core apparel business.
The pet-focused launch lands alongside a more consequential piece of news from across the Atlantic. A RBC Capital Markets survey of US consumers for the "back-to-school" season has placed Adidas at the top of the brand popularity rankings for the first time — edging past long-time rival Nike. Analyst Piral Dadhania reaffirmed an "Outperform" rating on Wednesday, pointing to meaningful market share gains in the US and a steady performance in China as evidence that the brand is regaining traction with American shoppers despite a difficult stretch for the sector.
That vote of confidence offers a counterweight to a share price that has been under sustained pressure. The stock closed Wednesday's session at €156.05, up 1.1 percent on the day, but the monthly picture remains bleak: a decline of 12 percent over the past 30 days shows how much ground the recent positive headlines have yet to recover. The bounce follows weeks of downward momentum that has left investors questioning whether the operational story is being overshadowed by broader market forces.
The product pipeline is working overtime to change that narrative. Just a day before the pet collection debut, Adidas unveiled its new "Chaos vs Control" football boot series, featuring technical upgrades such as the "NANOSTRIKE+" mesh upper and the "STRIKEFRAME" outsole technology across the F50 and Predator models. These initiatives — spanning performance gear and lifestyle extensions — reflect a strategy of broadening the brand's reach across different consumer segments, a diversification that the RBC survey suggests is resonating.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Adidas?
Not everyone is convinced the optimism is warranted. The Wolf Report downgraded Adidas to "Hold" on August 14 with a price target of €150, citing valuation concerns and structural risks despite short-term momentum from the football World Cup. Analyst Richard Edwards struck a similarly cautious tone in early August, flagging late-cycle industry trends and intensified marketing efforts from competitors. UBS has also kept its "Neutral" stance on the stock for roughly two weeks, during which time the shares have shed 3.3 percent.
The broader sector backdrop remains fragile. Disappointing revenue figures from Swiss rival On Holding dragged down the entire sporting goods complex in mid-August, pulling Adidas, Puma and Nike into negative territory at various points. Even the company's own second-quarter results — which showed revenue growth of 13.29 percent to €6.74 billion and earnings per share of €2.10 — failed to arrest the slide. Since that late-July release, the stock has given back 2.0 percent, a disconnect between operational strength and share price performance that has become a central theme for investors.
Management, for its part, is signalling conviction through action. Adidas repurchased nearly 630,000 of its own shares on Xetra in late July as part of the second tranche of its buyback programme. CEO Björn Gulden reportedly added to his personal stake in early August, acquiring shares worth around €500,000 — a move widely interpreted as a vote of confidence in the company's strategic direction. Separately, NNS Investments (Cyprus) Limited, tied to supervisory board member Nassef Sawiris, reported a transaction in early August that has been read in a similar light.
The market's attention now turns to October 29, when Adidas is scheduled to report third-quarter 2026 financials. Between now and then, the central question is whether the fresh tailwind from US consumer sentiment translates into concrete revenue figures — or whether the valuation sceptics, watching from the sidelines, will ultimately be proven right.
