Airbus Balances Record Deliveries Against a Thinning Cash Cushion

Airbus posts strong H1 profit and record Q2 deliveries, but shrinking cash and overbought technicals temper investor enthusiasm.

The numbers Airbus delivered for the first half of 2026 were hard to argue with — yet the market's response on Wednesday was notably measured. The aerospace giant posted a net profit of €2.24 billion, up 47 percent year-on-year, on revenue of €33.2 billion, while confirming its full-year guidance of roughly 870 commercial deliveries and €7.5 billion in adjusted operating profit. The shares still managed to advance, trading at €216.20 with a gain of 1.12 percent, but the muted reaction tells its own story: investors are weighing operational strength against a shrinking cash position.

That tension sits at the heart of the current valuation debate. The stock now sits just 2.28 percent below its 52-week high of €221.25, reached in January, having staged a powerful recovery from its March low. Over the past twelve months the equity has climbed roughly 21 percent, and the past week alone brought a 5.35 percent gain. With the shares trading about 17.92 percent above their 50-day moving average and an RSI reading of 71, the technical picture is beginning to look stretched — a signal that short-term pullbacks are possible even if the fundamental story remains intact.

Delivery Momentum and the Supply Chain Question

The second quarter delivered a record 237 aircraft, a 39 percent jump from the same period last year, bringing the first-half total to 351 units. That surge was partly catch-up after supply chain disruptions slowed the opening quarter, which raises the central question for the remainder of the year: can the delivery pace hold, or will engine and component bottlenecks resurface?

Airbus is taking steps to shore up its supply base. On Thursday, the company announced an agreement with Aerolloy Technologies, a subsidiary of Indian supplier PTC Industries, covering the development, production and delivery of titanium castings for the A320neo, A330neo and A350 programs. The parts will be manufactured in India under the "Make in India, Make for the World" initiative. Titanium castings are a notoriously vulnerable link in aerospace production, so diversifying this sourcing channel carries strategic weight — particularly as competitors like Honeywell Aerospace have publicly admitted to underestimating the persistence of their own supply chain difficulties.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Airbus?

Order Book Momentum and Capital Returns

Demand shows no signs of cooling. Within a few weeks, Airbus secured firm orders from SMBC Aviation Capital for 100 A321neo aircraft, from flynas for five additional A330-900s and 20 A321neo, from BermudAir for 10 A220-300s, and from Riyadh Air for six more A350-1000s. The defense and space divisions added their own wins: Spanish operator Hisdesat named Airbus prime contractor for the SpainSat NG-III communications satellite, and the helicopter unit handed over the first NH90 Standard 2 to France's DGA procurement agency for special forces use.

Management has matched this commercial momentum with a clear capital returns strategy. Late July brought the announcement of a €5 billion share buyback program spread over three years, alongside a medium-term target of €12 billion to €13 billion in adjusted operating profit by 2029. Analysts have responded favorably: RBC Capital raised its price target from €225 to €250 on August 2, citing delivery growth and the new financial goals, while UBS followed on August 3 with a target of €240 and a buy rating. The FactSet consensus estimate has climbed from €218.79 to €223.80 since the results were published.

Defense Ambitions Take a New Shape

The defense side also made news with the unveiling of the U760 Ravenstorm, an unmanned combat drone measuring 43 feet in length with a 33-foot wingspan. The platform builds on experience from the Barracuda and LOUT programs and joins the U740 Valkyrie in an expanding drone portfolio. The timing is notable: the reveal follows the collapse of the NGF program, a next-generation manned fighter jet initiative. Airbus is signaling that its European air superiority ambitions will now be pursued through unmanned systems rather than a traditional fighter platform.

Airbus at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

What Could Derail the Rally

Not every analyst is unreservedly bullish. One institution trimmed its 2027 earnings estimate despite the strong first-half showing, a reminder that not all market participants expect the current momentum to extend indefinitely. The structural risks remain concentrated in the supply chain — particularly around titanium and engine components, the very areas that constrained the first quarter. A return to four-day on-site presence starting in September, reported in employee forums but not officially confirmed, could have at most an indirect effect on operational stability.

If the third and fourth quarters sustain the delivery velocity shown in the spring, the path to the full-year targets looks realistic, and with it a push toward the 52-week high. Should delivery speeds falter again, however, the overbought technical position could quickly become a liability. The next concrete test arrives with third-quarter delivery and order figures, which will show whether the early-summer record pace was a genuine step change or a one-off surge. For now, the combination of record deliveries, fresh supply chain partnerships and a reinvigorated defense pipeline paints a picture of a company advancing on multiple fronts — even if the market's enthusiasm remains tempered by that thinning cash buffer.
