Allianz shares hover near record highs as Goldman Sachs sees upside while JPMorgan turns neutral, citing rich valuation after major acquisitions.

The Allianz share price closed Friday at €441.60, a gain of 0.7 percent on the day and within striking distance of its 52-week high of €443.80, set just days earlier on August 6. Yet beneath that placid chart lies a more contentious reality: two of Wall Street's most influential houses have looked at the same half-year numbers and reached opposite conclusions about where the stock goes from here.

A Two-Pronged Expansion

The Munich-based insurer is simultaneously executing two major strategic moves. On July 24, it agreed to acquire HSBC Life Singapore for approximately €2.0 billion, a deal that brings with it a 15-year exclusive distribution partnership with HSBC Singapore. The target generated an operating profit of €80 million last year against comprehensive equity of €1.2 billion. Completion is slated for the first half of 2027.

Just six days later, on July 30, Allianz announced it would lift its stake in asset manager Pimco from 90.6 percent to at least 95 percent. The mechanism is a buyback of so-called M Units — part of an employee participation program — for a minimum of €1.4 billion, valuing Pimco at roughly €31.8 billion. The increased ownership lets Allianz capture a larger share of Pimco's earnings without any operational restructuring at the asset manager.

The Analyst Split

The divergent Wall Street views landed on Friday. Goldman Sachs raised its price target to €465, reaffirming a "Buy" rating and citing, among other factors, first-half operating profit growth of 8.6 percent. JPMorgan's Kamran M. Hossain, meanwhile, lifted his target from €430 to €460 — while simultaneously downgrading the stock to "Neutral."

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Allianz?

Both firms raised their operating profit forecasts through 2028. The disagreement is purely about valuation. Goldman sees roughly 6 percent upside from current levels; JPMorgan's stance effectively signals fair value has been reached. The stock, trading just 0.5 percent below its recent high, sits almost exactly between the two new targets — a coincidence that sharpens the debate.

Technical indicators lend some support to JPMorgan's caution. The 14-day RSI stands at 70.2, a territory often read as overbought. The shares have advanced about 13 percent since the start of the year and 17 percent over twelve months.

Capital Strength as the Enabler

That Allianz can absorb two billion-euro transactions nearly simultaneously reflects a robust balance sheet. The Solvency II ratio stood at 225 percent at mid-year, up from 218 percent at the end of 2025. A share buyback program of up to €2.5 billion is underway, with €1.4 billion already executed in the first half. Annualized adjusted return on equity climbed to 20.7 percent, a notable jump from 18.1 percent in the prior-year period.

The combination of a high capital ratio, an active buyback, and substantial acquisitions suggests the company sees no contradiction between returning cash to shareholders and pursuing external growth.

Boardroom Reshuffle

Personnel changes accompany the strategic push. On July 24, Allianz announced that GĂĽnther Thallinger will leave the board at the end of 2026, reducing its size from nine to eight members. From January 2027, Tomas Kunzmann will add global health insurance and sustainability topics to his existing Asia-Pacific responsibilities, while Andreas Wimmer takes charge of investment management.

The restructuring dovetails with the Asian expansion, potentially smoothing the integration of new holdings into established reporting lines. The next scheduled update comes with third-quarter results on November 12.
