Almonty: Sangdong Output Has Started, but the Cargo Still Has to Sail
Published on 10/22/2026 at 20:02 | Editorial boerse-global.deTwo distinct yardsticks now matter for Almonty holders: what the mine is doing, and what has actually left the dock. Diamond Equity Research reported yesterday that Sangdong has begun producing tungsten concentrate, and that the second expansion phase is already underway with completion targeted for 2027. Neither milestone answers the shipping question — concentrate in a tank and tonnage on a vessel are not the same thing.
The shares were down 3.6% in pre-market trading today, a move that offers no fresh company-specific trigger. A separate reading earlier in the session had shown a 7.8% daily decline; on neither basis does the tape tell you why, and neither figure should be read as proof that a particular analyst decision caused the slide.
Capacity, production and delivery are three different scorecards
At Monday's investor day, management said Sangdong Phase I is in operation. Phase II is designed to double capacity to 1.2 million tonnes a year. That is an operating outlook, not a statement about volumes actually shipped. A running plant describes one kind of progress; a completed delivery describes another; a planned expansion speaks only to future possibility. Collapsing the three into a single success story gets ahead of the evidence.
A stricter standard is warranted. Almonty should not be judged solely on the capacity it can eventually reach. Whether the timetable for deliveries holds up matters just as much — and that is precisely where a recent analyst revision landed.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Almonty?
A lower target is not a sell signal
Stifel's Brock Cannon cut his price target to US$21 from US$25 on Tuesday while keeping a Buy rating. The driver was revised assumptions on the timing of deliveries from Sangdong Phase I and Phase II following the investor day. Cannon's read was that the event produced no groundbreaking news.
The unchanged positive rating is less telling than the shift in expectations. An analyst can stay constructive on the long-term outlook and still justify a lower valuation. There is no contradiction there — it simply shows how little a Buy rating on its own says about how durable near-term expectations are. The Stifel adjustment supplies context for the recent weakness; it does not stand as a confirmed explanation for today's move. Nor does the cut support the opposite overreach: delivery assumptions were changed, not the entire operating case, and nothing in it amounts to a verdict that the project has failed.
A booking is not a shipment
The first vessel delivery announced roughly two weeks ago remains the key test. According to Diamond Equity Research, the first ship for Sangdong was booked for 24 October 2026. Take that wording literally: a booking does not confirm that any shipment has occurred.
The financing behind the research belongs in the same frame. The report published yesterday was commissioned and paid for by Almonty, with disclosed fees for research services of US$100,000. That does not make the statement about the ship booking false. It does argue for restraint before treating it as independent confirmation of operating success. Sponsor-funded analysis and a completed cargo are different classes of evidence.
Tungsten prices are leaning the other way
The pricing backdrop has deteriorated as well. Shanghai Metals Market reported a reference price for wolframite concentrate of RMB 302,000 per standard tonne as of 15 October, a fall of RMB 75,000 per standard tonne within the month. That is an industry-level development, not a fresh Almonty announcement, but it stacks a second burden on top of the softer delivery assumptions.
So two drags now sit alongside one genuine operational step. The start of production is progress; it removes neither the revised shipping timeline nor the weaker tungsten price. What settles the question is execution — plant running, transport booked, cargo delivered, each assessed on its own terms. Almonty's outlook should be measured by which of its announced steps actually get completed, not by how favourably their potential is described.
