Almonty: Sangdong's 60-Day Countdown Matters More Than Any Price Target

Almonty says Sangdong may ship below spec at first, targeting full rates within 60 days. Analysts cut targets on delivery timing and peer multiples.

Almonty's investment case now hinges on a single question of timing: when does Sangdong stop ramping and start delivering to spec? CEO Lewis Black told last week's investor day that first shipments may fall below specification, with the company expecting to reach intended production rates and quality standards within 60 days. That admission, rather than any headline price target, is the number that should anchor how investors read everything else coming out of the tungsten miner.

A Booked Ship Is Not a Completed Voyage

The company-commissioned order analysis published Wednesday held to its illustrative equity value of $20.00 per share, pointing to the Sangdong ramp-up and the first vessel booked for October 24. Tying a valuation to a concrete logistics date makes the delivery schedule feel tangible in a way general project updates do not. The distinction still matters: a booking is not a completed shipment, and planning can support expectations without proving execution. Treating the two as equivalent pre-books part of the operational success in an investor's mind.

The nature of that research deserves equal weight. Company-commissioned analysis is not the same as independent brokerage coverage. That does not make the argument wrong, but the $20.00 figure should not be read as a second, independent endorsement of management's story.

Two Tasks Running in Parallel

Sangdong is commercially operational, Black said, while work has begun on equipment orders and underground planning for Phase II. Two jobs therefore sit side by side: managing the current ramp-up and preparing the next expansion stage. An additional phase widens the horizon but does not substitute for proof that the first one performs. Equipment orders and specification-grade production answer different questions, and not every progress announcement carries the same weight.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Almonty?

The short-cycle supply programs in Los Santos and Rwanda round out the picture. They are a supplementary building block, not a stand-in for Sangdong's delivery timetable.

Two Targets Cut, Two Different Reasons

The analyst revisions cannot be pinned on a single trigger. Stifel trimmed its price target to $21 from $25 about a week ago while keeping its Buy rating; Brock Cannon tied the change to revised assumptions on the delivery timing of both Sangdong phases, noting the investor day brought no groundbreaking news. A constructive overall view and more cautious shipping assumptions plainly coexist.

Oppenheimer had already cut its target to $19 from $25 on October 15. Ian Zaffino pointed to lower valuation multiples among comparable companies, and the firm kept its outperform rating. Here a different yardstick applied: peer valuation rather than the delivery schedule. Almonty must therefore be measured both on its own execution and against how the market values its comparables.

Execution Is the Only Yardstick That Holds

Commercial operation and fulfillment of an expected shipping plan answer separate questions — the first concerns operating status, the second whether timeline expectations hold. The reported commercial start, the pursued expansion and the dated vessel booking are all serious signals of progress and justify a differentiated view of Almonty's development. They do not relieve investors of the work of verifying that progress.

The more convincing benchmark is implementation. The more announced steps translate into completed operations, the sturdier the bullish case becomes. Until then, Almonty deserves attention for its advances — but no leap of faith granted on the strength of an illustrative share value alone.
