Amazon is loosening the secrecy around its data center dealings while simultaneously deepening its ties to publicly funded research, a twin move that signals how the cloud giant intends to keep its infrastructure expansion on track.

Under a program unveiled Thursday, the company committed up to $50 million in AWS cloud credits spread across three years to support the expansion of the White House's Genesis Mission. Dubbed the Golden Age of Science Accelerator, the initiative is designed to channel specialized computing capacity toward large-scale scientific projects — and it binds Amazon more closely to government-backed technology research in the process.

A day earlier, AWS had rolled out its Physical AI Toolchain, a development and deployment solution built directly into Nvidia's Physical AI Stack. The offering targets developers working on physical artificial intelligence, the branch of the field that powers robotics and industrial automation, and leans on the chipmaker's systems to bring complex models into real-world hardware environments.

Community pledges and a shift on confidentiality

Software is only part of the story. On October 2, AWS earmarked more than $1 billion over five years for U.S. communities that host its data centers, directing the money toward education, workforce training, affordable energy and water- and power-conservation efforts.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

Alongside that pledge, the unit said it will stop requiring confidentiality agreements when negotiating data center projects with government and municipal authorities — a step aimed at easing local objections and smoothing the approval path for new server sites.

Garman pushes back on concentration fears

Concerns about runaway spending across the cloud and chip sector have weighed on sentiment, and AWS chief Matt Garman used a podcast appearance to counter the idea that Amazon's AI business rests on too few customers. The largest single client accounts for only a single-digit percentage of AWS revenue, he said, while start-ups contribute an estimated 30% to 40% of cloud sales — a mix that he argued blunts the risk of dangerous concentration.

Amazon has signaled total investment of roughly $220 billion for the current year, with demand for computing capacity currently outstripping supply by a wide margin. The aggressive build-out is leaving its mark on the group's cash flows: heavy capital expenditure recently pushed trailing free cash flow to a negative $7.6 billion.

Shares steady after a softer session

The stock came under pressure in the prior session, slipping 2.25% in U.S. trading as technology names broadly retreated amid swings in bond yields and oil prices. In European trading it shed 2.4% to EUR 226.60.

By Friday the shares had steadied, changing hands at EUR 228.50 for a gain of 0.8% on the day. That leaves the stock 8.2% below its 52-week high, though other market observers put the gap at 9.0%.

Attention now turns to month-end, when Amazon is scheduled to report third-quarter results on October 29. Whether management's confidence and the heavy utilization of its data centers are already showing up in the numbers will become clear then.
