Amazon's cloud division is growing at a pace that would flatter almost any business, yet the company's cash position tells a more complicated story. Those two facts sit at the heart of how investors are weighing the stock right now.

AWS revenue climbed 39% year over year to $46.0 billion in the third quarter of 2026, according to media reports. Group-wide sales rose 12% to $201.94 billion — just shy of the $202.2 billion analysts had penciled in. Diluted earnings per share came in at $1.89, also below the $1.97 consensus.

The shortfall in headline profit did not stop the broader growth narrative from advancing. Amazon reported operating income of $28.1 billion for the quarter, and its outlook points to further expansion: management guided fourth-quarter revenue to a range of $240.0 billion to $247.0 billion, with operating income projected between $28.5 billion and $33.5 billion.

The Cost of Building the Future

What has drawn sharper scrutiny is the money flowing out the door. Free cash flow over the trailing twelve months stood at negative $42.4 billion, a figure Amazon attributes largely to its escalating artificial intelligence investments. For 2026, the company continues to expect capital expenditures of roughly $220 billion on a cash basis.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

That spending commitment has become a lightning rod. On Thursday, Amazon shares came under pressure in a broad technology selloff, surrendering earlier gains. Media reports linked the weakness to rising bond yields and concerns that a Democrat-controlled Congress could move to restrict the construction of AI-related data centers following the midterm elections. The stock recovered somewhat on Friday, adding 0.4%.

Notably, the immediate trading impulse came from sector-wide weakness rather than any Amazon-specific announcement. Even so, the company's hefty AI outlays and cash burn moved back to the center of investors' attention.

Streamlining While Scaling

Amazon is not only spending — it is also trimming. On October 28, the company cut up to 250 positions in its Devices and Services unit, with software development roles bearing the brunt. Management framed the move as a push for greater efficiency and better alignment of staff with product roadmaps.

That restructuring runs in parallel with fresh product rollouts. Reuters reported that Amazon began on Friday rolling out Alexa for Shopping via text message to a small group of invited US customers. The assistant can search and compare products, track deals and price cuts, and complete purchases. A wider release is planned in the coming weeks.

The juxtaposition is deliberate: new shopping capabilities on one side, a leaner organization on the other. Whether the efficiency drive ultimately supports those product plans is the test investors will apply.

Amazon at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Wall Street Stays Constructive

Analysts have largely looked past the cash-flow concerns. Bernstein's Mark Shmulik reaffirmed his buy rating and $320 price target on Friday, though he did not raise the target. Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, Egor Tolmachev of Freedom Capital Markets lifted his price target from $255 to $330 while maintaining a buy recommendation.

For now, the debate comes down to whether Amazon can convert its cloud momentum and product expansion into durable economic returns — while carrying a capital spending burden that shows no sign of shrinking.
