ASML Keeps Buying Back Stock While Its Order Book Waits for Answers

ASML has confirmed a fresh batch of share repurchases under its existing buyback programme, covering transactions executed between 26 and 30 October. The disclosure is a progress report on capital already deployed — not an expansion of the framework and not a new steer on trading.

That distinction matters. A buyback shows how the company is using its cash; it says nothing new about demand for its lithography systems. Investors should keep the two questions apart.

The scale of the underlying business is clear enough. In the third quarter of 2026, ASML posted net sales of EUR 11.7 billion and a net profit of EUR 5.0 billion. Those figures form the backdrop to the repurchases, but nothing in the latest notice alters them. Its only incremental content is the steady execution of the programme.

A Pattern of Regular Disclosures

The latest filing follows a similar announcement on 26 October, when ASML reported the purchase of 343,310 shares for the preceding reporting week. Taken together, the two notices point to a programme being worked through methodically rather than a one-off gesture.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

Alongside the buybacks, ASML is returning cash directly to shareholders. A interim dividend of EUR 1.88 per ordinary share is scheduled for payment on 4 November 2026, and the company fixed the exchange rate for payment to New York shareholders on Tuesday. Both channels of capital return, however, are separate from operating demand and from how the stock is valued — they do not answer the same question as expectations for future orders.

AI Spending Doubts Linger

The buyback news lands against a tougher backdrop for chip stocks. On Friday, ASML came under pressure in a broader selloff of AI-linked technology names, triggered according to media reports by Intel's weak revenue guidance and Amazon's disclosure of heavy AI-driven cash outflows. Reuters also linked the wider weakness in semiconductor shares to doubts over the scale and returns of AI spending.

That debate stretches well beyond the near-term business outlook. Demand for equipment is only part of it; just as important is whether the planned investments can be financed and whether data centres can be built out as expected.

ING economists underlined how much weight ASML carries beyond its own walls. Reuters reported on 26 October that their estimate puts ASML's direct contribution at up to 1.6% of Dutch economic output in 2026 — a measure of macroeconomic significance, not a revenue forecast, and no extra evidence on future orders.

Vietnam Talks Still Short of a Deal

On the demand side, the gap between possible business and signed agreements remains wide. Reuters reported on 26 October that a deal for Vietnam to purchase ASML equipment had not yet been concluded, and that the country will likely miss its target of a first semiconductor fab trial run in 2027.

ASML Holding at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The distinction is straightforward: the share purchases just reported have been executed, while the Vietnam transaction has not been agreed. Today's news concerns how ASML deploys its capital, not a fresh inflow of orders.

The Valuation Question Remains Open

Scepticism about the sector's growth expectations has not faded. Back on 15 October, Reuters quoted Jefferies analyst Janardan Menon pointing to financing concerns and bottlenecks in data-centre expansion. He identified doubts about the lofty expectations for 2028 and 2029 as the main reason for the de-rating in the stock.

Against that, the new buyback notice offers a completed capital action — but it is neither a fresh operating forecast nor an answer to the profitability questions surrounding the AI build-out. For anyone weighing ASML shares, capital returns and long-term business expectations still have to be assessed on separate ledgers.
