ASML's Books and Its Share Price Are Telling Two Different Stories

ASML fell 5.0% Friday on Intel's weak outlook and AI spending worries, even as Q3 net sales hit EUR 11.7B and buybacks continued.

ASML closed Friday down 5.0%, caught in a broad retreat across European technology stocks. Reuters tied the selloff to Intel's weak outlook and mounting unease over the cost and payback of AI infrastructure spending. Yet the company itself has spent the past few weeks reporting strong numbers and returning cash to shareholders — a split screen that investors would do well to read carefully.

The distinction that matters is between ASML's operating results and the market's appetite for risk. The selling pressure Reuters described was not an ASML-specific event; it swept the semiconductor sector as a whole. At the same time, the anxiety over AI spending is really a question about whether those investments will earn their keep — something no single earnings report can settle.

What the third quarter actually delivered

On October 14, ASML reported results for the third quarter of 2026: net sales of EUR 11.7 billion, a gross margin of 57.5%, and net profit of EUR 5.0 billion. Those figures give a concrete operational yardstick against which the broader industry worries can be measured. They also describe a quarter that is already closed, whereas the concerns circulating in the market reach into future demand and the cost of building out technology capacity. A reported profit and more skeptical expectations can coexist quite comfortably.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

For the final quarter, ASML held out revenue of between EUR 14.2 billion and 15.2 billion. That remains a forecast, not revenue already booked. For the full year 2026, the company projected sales of EUR 44 billion to EUR 45 billion — the corporate reference point against which the coming months will be judged.

Cash is already moving

While the market was re-rating the sector's prospects, ASML was busy executing its share buyback program. Between October 19 and 23, the company repurchased 343,310 shares for a total of EUR 499,270,777. These are completed transactions, not merely an announced authorization — a meaningful difference for anyone trying to separate what ASML has done from what investors fear it might face.

A payout is on the calendar as well. ASML set the EUR/USD conversion rate for its interim dividend to New York shareholders at 1.1148 on October 27. The interim dividend for 2026 of EUR 1.88 per ordinary share is scheduled for payment on November 4, 2026.

Add it up and the picture is two-sided: reported profits and executed capital returns on one hand, a share price exposed to shifting expectations for the technology sector on the other. Friday's 5.0% decline and the buybacks and dividend belong to different conversations. Keeping them apart is the first step toward understanding what ASML's stock is actually saying.
