ASML's Korean Order Pipeline Meets a Delivery Ceiling

Korean memory makers reportedly consider 10-20 trillion won EUV orders beyond 2027, a demand signal as ASML's 2027-2028 capacity falls short.

Samsung and SK Hynix are weighing earlier EUV purchases worth 10 to 20 trillion won each, Chosun Biz reported — a potential demand tailwind that lands just as ASML's own supply constraints take center stage.

The Korean report points to delivery dates beyond 2027, with any additional orders contingent on how expansion plans develop. For ASML shareholders, the signal matters less for near-term shipments than for what it says about the durability of memory-maker spending beyond the current buildout. Memory producers accounted for 46% of ASML's system sales in the third quarter of 2026, giving their capital decisions outsized weight.

There is already a firm anchor. SK Hynix disclosed an EUV purchase worth roughly 11.95 trillion won on March 24, covering installation and maintenance through December 2027. Media reports place the tools at the Yongin cluster and the M15X fab in Cheongju. That contract ties ASML to concrete HBM and DRAM expansion — but the actual tool count remains undisclosed, making average-selling-price estimates a poor guide to future orders.

The demand side looks sturdy; the supply side is the puzzle

On October 14, ASML said its planned delivery capacity for 2027 and 2028 would not fully cover customer demand. Some customers, according to the company, were already inquiring about orders with delivery in 2029 and 2030 — interest that prompted ASML to review a further capacity expansion. Whether that review turns into steel and cleanroom space is now the pivotal company-specific catalyst.

The math cuts both ways. Extra capacity only pays off if customers claim it; strong demand only converts into revenue if ASML can ship against it. Investors waiting for a capacity decision should watch its scope and implementation timeline.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

EUV intensity offers a second leg. TrendForce reckons SK Hynix needs at least five EUV layers for 1c DRAM — two more than the prior generation. Samsung, meanwhile, plans to deploy High-NA EUV in volume DRAM production by 2028, rolling it out layer by layer as individual process steps qualify. A technical checkpoint arrives in the fourth quarter of 2026, when tool qualification at imec involving larger photomasks is scheduled — a possible read on how the High-NA ecosystem is maturing.

Morgan Stanley remains constructive. Analyst Lee Simpson reaffirmed an "Overweight" rating and a €1,700 price target on Friday.

Two clocks are ticking at once

The stock's 5.6% gain on Friday rode a broader rebound in semiconductor and AI names. Reuters attributed the move to a counter-swing after the prior selloff, with the October U.S. jobs report also steadying sentiment. That rally sits in a different time zone from the order book: regulation drives risk appetite by the day, while delivery capacity shapes the multi-year story.

Buybacks add a third element. ASML reported the repurchase of 346,200 shares for the October 26–30 period on Monday, continuing its program. Capital returns carry more weight when they sit alongside operational progress — specifically, a credible path to shipping what customers are asking for.

China and policy keep a lid on certainty

The bear case rests on cyclical demand colliding with export politics. Morgan Stanley flags softer demand, China and a slower High-NA rollout as risks. China accounted for 23% of ASML's system sales in the third quarter of 2026, up from 14% in the prior quarter. Chinese memory makers have reportedly stockpiled equipment ahead of possible export restrictions, meaning part of that demand may have been pulled forward. Stockpiles at CXMT and YMTC are said to cover several years of growth plans. Meanwhile, Washington is reportedly pressing The Hague for a full export stop.

Should weaker follow-on Chinese orders coincide with delayed Korean commitments, the growth case gets harder to defend. Confirmed additional orders from Samsung or SK Hynix would be the cleanest rebuttal, though no date for such an announcement has been set. Until then, the verdict hangs on whether technical milestones and binding customer investment arrive together.
