ASML's Order Book Runs to 2030 — the Market Is Still Arguing Over Who Foots the AI Bill
Published on 10/24/2026 at 13:21 | Editorial boerse-global.deASML spent Thursday caught in a crossfire it did not load itself. The Dutch chip-equipment maker shed 6.9% as a broad selloff in semiconductor stocks swept the sector, with press reports pointing to rising AI spending at Meta and a wider erosion of confidence in AI-linked equities. No fresh company disclosure drove the slide. That distinction sits at the heart of the current debate: investors are questioning the economics and financing of the AI buildout, not the demand for ASML's machines.
The two narratives have been running side by side for weeks. On one hand, customers are committing capital at a pace that stretches years into the future. On the other, the market is growing more skeptical about whether those investments will earn an adequate return. Thursday's trading showed the second view briefly winning out.
Capacity, Not Orders, Is the Binding Constraint
ASML raised its revenue guidance roughly two weeks ago, projecting EUR 44 billion to EUR 45 billion for 2026. Management also said its planned machine output will not fully satisfy customer requirements — a shortfall that applies to 2027 and 2028. Reuters reported on October 14 that clients were already looking to place orders for 2029 and 2030.
That reframes the operating question from "can ASML win business?" to "can it ship what it has already been asked for?" Long-dated interest from customers is a meaningful demand signal, but it is not booked revenue. What matters is how far ASML can scale production and actually deliver against the need.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?
The delivery side got a concrete data point this week. Reuters reported Tuesday on Elon Musk's statement that ASML and other suppliers had accelerated equipment shipments for Terafab, the SpaceX-Tesla joint project targeting high-volume chip production in the third quarter of 2028. That commitment covers one specific venture — it is not a pledge that ASML can serve total expected demand, and the production start remains a project goal rather than a reached milestone. Faster shipments for a single fab and a capacity warning for the industry fit together comfortably: individual deliveries can move ahead while aggregate planned supply stays behind customer requirements. Management is examining additional capacity for the later of the two constrained years.
Buybacks Put Capital to Work While the Debate Rages
On the capital-return front, ASML reported Monday the repurchase of 233,867 shares for a total of EUR 352,032,719. The buys were executed under the running program between October 12 and 16, with no repurchases reported for October 14. The disclosure documents completed transactions rather than a stated intention, and it speaks to how the company is deploying its cash — a separate matter from how quickly it can get equipment to customers.
The Numbers Behind the Headlines
Third-quarter 2026 results provide the financial backdrop: net revenue of EUR 11.662 billion and net profit of EUR 4.960 billion. For the fourth quarter, ASML forecasts net revenue of EUR 14.2 billion to EUR 15.2 billion. Hitting that range is the next near-term yardstick; over the longer haul, the test is how much of the projected supply gap the capacity expansion can close.
It helps to keep the layers apart. The quarterly figures describe business already booked. The buyback announcement evidences capital being returned. The shipment and capacity commentary addresses future ability to meet demand. Doubts about the returns on future AI investment are not the same as a reported deterioration at ASML — and Thursday's retreat, followed by a 0.6% gain yesterday, did not resolve the underlying tension. ASML keeps reporting strong demand while the market grows more critical of the economics standing behind it. That gap, more than any single quarter, is what will set the share price from here.
