AST SpaceMobile's Contracts Multiply While the Service Stays Intermittent

AST SpaceMobile has spent the past week collecting partners the way a satellite collects ground stations — steadily, and across several continents. Brazilian carriers have signed on, a European joint venture is supplying terrestrial backbone, and the operator now counts more than 60 mobile networks representing over 3 billion subscribers inside its ecosystem. Scotiabank responded Friday by lifting its rating from "Sector Perform" to "Sector Outperform" and raising its price target from $50.80 to $55.70, a nod that helped push the stock up 2.7% on the day.

None of that constitutes a working, always-on network. And that gap — between the reach of the partners and the readiness of the service — is where the investment case actually lives.

What the Brazilian Deals Do and Don't Deliver

Brisanet, Unifique and Iez! Telecom have reportedly reached agreements with AST SpaceMobile to bring satellite-based voice, broadband and video to ordinary handsets, with no extra antennas or special apps required. The Brazilian partners would contribute their 700 MHz spectrum and handle the connection into their existing networks. Testing is slated to begin in November and run for two years, with the carriers said to have already secured trial approvals from Anatel.

The structure matters more than the headline. AST is not building a standalone network in the sky; it is renting its way to customers through operators who already hold spectrum and local infrastructure. That is a meaningful distinction from the vision of a fully independent orbital service — and it leaves the commercial questions open. No firm date for a regular market launch has been named, and no potential end-user surcharge has been disclosed.

Thirteen Satellites and a Part-Time Promise

The company currently operates 13 satellites, according to the reports. That is not enough for continuous coverage. AST's own stated target is equally measured: a first, intermittently available mobile broadband service before the end of 2026, covering the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. The geographic breadth is notable, but so is the explicit limit on what the service will do.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AST SpaceMobile?

Ground infrastructure tells a similar story. More than 60 gateways worldwide were deployed, installed or in planning as of Tuesday, per company figures. Those are three different stages of readiness bundled into one number — a planned site does not perform the same function as an installed one.

Europe Adds Infrastructure, Not Obligation

Roughly a week ago, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone disclosed they would explore a possible joint bid for spectrum earmarked for mobile satellite services. The initiative is exploratory; it is not a commercial contract. AST pointed to its European joint venture, Satellite Connect Europe, which is to provide European-operated ground infrastructure for the BlueBird constellation. Partnerships, spectrum access and infrastructure thus converge in a single project — though each piece carries its own degree of binding commitment.

Competition is converging too. Bloomberg reported that SpaceX is in talks over access to US mobile sites, pursuing its own American mobile service while AST works with incumbents in Brazil. Collaboration and rivalry are running side by side across the industry.

The Financing Question Lands in Court

For AST, the test does not end with getting a call to connect. Funding the buildout is part of the economics — and that same issue sits at the center of an investor lawsuit against the company and its executives, filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas. The plaintiffs allege, among other things, that capital needs and potential dilution were understated, while liquidity and competitive standing were painted too favorably. They also claim slow user adoption in the US and Japan went undisclosed. These are allegations, not established facts.

The suit covers buyers of AST securities between March 4, 2025 and July 15. The deadline to seek lead-plaintiff status is November 13.

The sober read: Brazil is a concrete step toward commercialization, and Scotiabank's upgrade is a rosier view of the prospects — not a company announcement of additional operational readiness. The economic weight of these agreements will be measured in availability, approvals and financeability. In satellite-to-phone service, the signed contract is not the finished product. The reliably usable connection is.
