Two developments landed within days of each other and pulled Aurubis in opposite directions. On October 14, the Hamburg-based copper producer set its European copper premium for 2027 at a record $347 per tonne, according to Reuters. A week later, Deutsche Bank Research trimmed its price target to EUR 169 from EUR 177 while keeping a "Hold" rating. Sandwiched between them, AlphaValue/Baader Europe upgraded the stock to "Buy."

The premium is roughly 10% above the prior year's level. That is a tangible data point, not a sentiment argument, and it gives investors a concrete reason to look past the gloom. What it does not do is answer whether the tougher ramp-up at the Richmond plant will weigh more heavily on earnings.

A Buy Rating Doesn't Settle the Argument

The gap between the two broker calls matters less than what each one actually says. The upgrade signals optimism. The cautious view names a specific operational risk. Analyst Bastian Synagowitz at Deutsche Bank expects a strong free cash flow but flagged the more demanding ramp-up at Richmond and cut his pre-tax profit forecasts for 2026 and 2027.

That distinction deserves attention. A strong expected cash inflow does not automatically settle the question of earnings growth. The positive cash flow call should not be read as an all-clear on every operational front.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aurubis?

Supply News Cuts Both Ways

Sensitivity to copper supply showed up on the same day the upgrade appeared. Media reports noted that BHP and Anglo American had posted declining copper output, and coverage of those figures was cited as the trigger for selling pressure in Aurubis shares. The catalyst sat in the copper market, not in any fresh company announcement.

Less mined copper therefore does not automatically mean tailwind for the stock — the market reaction that day carried no such simple reading. A headline about the metal is no substitute for an assessment of the company's own situation.

Kurth's New Seat in the Copper Council

Aurubis's own answer to the supply question came on October 20, when COO Tim Kurth was elected to the board of the International Wrought Copper Council. The company says Kurth will bring its perspective on secure raw material supply to the body. A council seat, though, is not a supply contract: no guaranteed volume of metal and no quantifiable contribution to earnings follow from the election.

The strategic ambition of supply security and measurable progress in the business belong together, but they are not the same thing. Aurubis cannot be reduced to either copper scarcity or Richmond. What makes the investment case is the link between them — and that link will be tested when the annual report is published on December 2.
