The market's reaction to Axon Enterprise's second-quarter results told a familiar story on Thursday: strong operational numbers, but a cautious investor response driven by near-term margin concerns. Shares of the security technology specialist fell 8.39% to EUR 482.80 in German trading, extending the stock's year-to-date decline to 1.87%.

The pullback came even as the company delivered what CEO Patrick Smith called another record quarter. Revenue jumped 35.3% year over year to $904.39 million, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of organic growth above 30%. Management used the momentum to lift its full-year outlook, now projecting revenue growth of 32% to 34%, up from the previously communicated range of 30% to 32%.

Margin Pressures Cloud the Picture

The disconnect between the headline numbers and the share price centers on costs. Axon flagged that rising prices for components — particularly memory chips — along with expenses tied to ramping up new product lines, are expected to weigh on margins in the near term. That warning, reported by media outlets, appears to have undercut what was otherwise a broadly positive earnings release.

The bottom line reflected some of that pressure. GAAP net income fell to $29.43 million, or $0.36 per share, from $36.12 million in the year-ago period. Adjusted EBITDA, however, climbed to $242 million, and the company reaffirmed its target of roughly 25.5% adjusted EBITDA margin for the full year. On an adjusted basis, earnings per share came in at $1.88, topping the consensus estimate of $1.84.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Axon Enterprise?

Some analysts see a softer second half baked into the revised guidance. The new outlook implies average quarterly growth of around 31.7% over the next two quarters — a step down from the 35.3% pace recorded in Q2. That moderation, rather than any fundamental deterioration, may be driving some of Thursday's selling.

Drone Defense and AI Software Hit Milestones

Beneath the surface, Axon's newer business lines are gaining serious traction. The Dedrone division, which specializes in counter-drone technology, surpassed $100 million in quarterly revenue for the first time, helped by securing contracts for World Cup venues across eleven U.S. cities. The "AI Era" software program saw revenue surge nearly 700% compared with the same period last year.

The software and services segment overall grew 36% to $398 million, with annual recurring revenue reaching $1.6 billion, up 39%. Net revenue retention — a key metric measuring customer loyalty and upselling potential — held at a solid 126%. Meanwhile, the platform solutions unit posted a 123% jump to $150 million.

The order book tells an equally compelling story. Future contracted bookings rose 41.1% to a record $15.1 billion, including two nine-figure contracts with major U.S. cities. One of those represents the largest single Taser order in company history. Axon also signed its first contract for the full end-to-end Axon-911 solution. International bookings nearly tripled year over year, adding to the momentum.

Analysts Stay Bullish Despite the Dip

Wall Street largely looked past the share price reaction. Needham reiterated its buy rating with a $750 price target, pointing to the bookings growth and a 70% increase in software revenue outside the Evidence.com platform. William Blair maintained its outperform rating, arguing that the long-term order pipeline underpins the stability of the business model. Chris Versace of TheStreet Pro also reaffirmed his $700 price target, expressing confidence in the company's operational progress despite the market's response.

Axon Enterprise at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Free cash flow came in slightly negative at negative $1 million, a figure analysts attribute to investments in future growth and the integration of new technologies rather than any underlying weakness.

In a separate corporate development, President Joshua Isner received an allocation of stock-based compensation units on Wednesday, vesting over twelve quarters through the third quarter of 2029.

The stock now sits 33.09% below its 52-week high, a gap that reflects both the recent pullback and the elevated valuation the shares had reached during their extended run. For investors willing to look past the near-term margin noise, the underlying growth metrics — record bookings, surging AI-related revenue, and a drone defense business hitting scale — suggest the company's expansion story remains very much intact.
