Ballard Power's Growth Arithmetic: 30% Revenue Targets, a Borrowing Plan, and a November Reckoning
Published on 11/04/2026 at 07:20 | Editorial boerse-global.deBallard Power has sketched out the financial shape of its next three years, and the numbers are ambitious: average annual revenue growth of 30% across the next two fiscal years, gross margins above 20% in 2027 and above 25% in 2028, and positive adjusted EBITDA by the end of 2027 — sustained across the whole of 2028. The framework was laid out at the company's Ballard Forum roughly two weeks ago. None of it has been achieved yet.
Investors gave the stock a modest nod on the day, with shares rising 3.3%. That move says little about whether the plan holds together. What matters is whether technical deployments turn into repeat business with margins that can carry the company — a question the product announcements do not answer on their own.
From Festival Stages to a Business Model
The most visible edge of Ballard's strategy is mobile hydrogen power: generation units that serve events far from the stationary grid. Concerts, festivals and golf tournaments provide the proving ground. Ballard and its subsidiary GeoPura reported on 21 October on supplying power at events including Boomtown, the Edinburgh Summer Sessions and the Solheim Cup.
The roster of well-known venues is not the interesting part for shareholders. Ballard pointed specifically to repeat deployments and larger commitments, which the company says could support expansion in North America and Europe. That is a prospectus, not a proven growth record. A single successful deployment demonstrates that an application works in practice; recurring demand would be the economically meaningful signal, suggesting customers are coming back rather than merely trialling the technology. Ballard's disclosures point in that direction but do not substitute for reported financial progress.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ballard Power?
The HPU Agile-H, unveiled about a week ago, fits the same pattern. GeoPura developed the mobile hydrogen power unit, Siemens Energy manufactures it, and a Ballard fuel cell drives the power generation. Pre-orders are open in the UK, Europe and North America. Output is 80 kW, with first deliveries scheduled for the first quarter of 2027 — a clear execution step still standing between the product launch and revenue. Whether pre-orders convert into shipments, and single events into recurring customer relationships, is what the valuation will ultimately hinge on. An open order book is not proof of demand volume.
The Balance Sheet Behind the Growth Story
Financing is the other half of the expansion case, and Ballard has attached concrete terms to it. The company flagged capital expenditure of $80 million to $120 million for growing its HPU fleet, with the pace of that spending kept flexible. Funding is expected to come through asset-backed loans with a loan-to-value ratio above 80%.
That structure belongs squarely inside the growth narrative rather than beside it. New applications and additional units are one side of the equation; securing the capital to build them is the other, and investors should weigh the two together. Chief executive Marty Neese has said the joint business with GeoPura aims to expand managed power supply offerings in North America and Europe.

What the Third Quarter Must Show
The next confirmed date on the calendar is the conference call on third-quarter 2026 results, set for 16 November 2026 at 8:00 a.m. It offers the first scheduled occasion to set Ballard's commercial development against its product and deployment news.
The yardstick there should be sober: what can already be seen in revenue quality, margins and progress toward the targeted result? One caution is worth keeping in mind — a positive adjusted EBITDA is not the same as a net profit, so investors should hold the company to the same earnings measure it has chosen when judging success later. Hydrogen applications give Ballard's story concrete settings. The economic evidence still has to come from the figures. Only then does visible technology translate into a sturdier foundation for the share price.
