BioNTech Builds a Cancer Franchise Around Pumitamig — While Two Analysts Disagree on What It's Worth
Published on 10/28/2026 at 07:50 | Editorial boerse-global.deTwo research notes landed on the same day this week, and they could hardly have diverged more. Jessica Fye of J.P. Morgan reiterated a Hold rating on BioNTech with an $86.86 price target. John Newman of Canaccord Genuity, by contrast, reaffirmed his Buy call and a $132 target. Neither verdict hinges on a single trial readout. What separates them is how much weight each analyst is willing to place on a development pipeline that is being assembled largely through partnerships.
That partnership model was on full display in the span of four days. On October 22, BioNTech and Gilead Sciences announced a clinical collaboration under which Gilead will supply sacituzumab govitecan — marketed as Trodelvy — for testing alongside BioNTech's pumitamig. The planned indication is first-line treatment of locally advanced or metastatic triple-negative breast cancer with low or absent PD-L1 expression. BioNTech said it will adapt the Phase 3 ROSETTA Breast-01 study to evaluate the combination, and according to Reuters the German company will run the trial, subject to regulatory approval. Gilead's role is to provide the drug.
The division of labor is the substantive detail here, not the marquee names. BioNTech takes the lead on testing a combination; Gilead contributes the compound. Whether that pairing produces a convincing treatment approach is a question only the study can answer — the agreement itself is no proof of efficacy.
A Response Rate, and the Limits of Reading It
Sunday brought the data that gives the pumitamig story its first hard number. BioNTech and Bristol Myers Squibb reported results from the Phase 2 ROSETTA Lung-107 study: a confirmed objective response rate of 36.7% for pumitamig plus docetaxel in previously treated metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. The companies called the findings encouraging.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BioNTech?
Efficacy was assessed in 30 patients, with confirmed responses observed across differing PD-L1 expression levels, according to the two companies. The combination was tested after disease progression on immunotherapy and chemotherapy. Across all 50 patients treated, an early median progression-free survival of 6.9 months was reported — the interval without disease progression. Management characterized the safety profile as manageable and flagged no new safety signals.
The temptation is to carry that 36.7% into every other setting where pumitamig appears. That would be a mistake. A shared molecule links these programs; it does not make them interchangeable.
A Phase 3 Win With a Measured Margin
Monday's news reinforced the point. BioNTech and DualityBiologics said trastuzumab pamirtecan met the primary endpoint of the Phase 3 DYNASTY-Breast02 trial, delivering a statistically significant improvement in progression-free survival versus chemotherapy — but only a moderate one. The study enrolled patients with metastatic, hormone receptor-positive breast cancer with low HER2 expression. Interim overall survival data were not yet mature. The positive endpoint and the modest size of the benefit belong together; one does not cancel the other.
Infrastructure is the third leg of the story. On October 21, BioNTech and the state of Victoria opened an mRNA production and research facility at La Trobe University in Melbourne, built to clinical-scale capacity. Alongside the collaborations, it represents the company's own manufacturing and development base.
Taken as a whole, the thread running through these announcements is not a single breakthrough. It is the combination of partnerships, clinical testing and infrastructure — breadth that creates options but carries no guarantee. The gap between a Hold at $86.86 and a Buy at $132 is, in the end, a disagreement about how much of that optionality deserves credit before the evidence is in. BioNTech's third-quarter 2026 results, due November 3 with an investor conference and webcast, will be the next scheduled occasion to test the case.
