Broadcom's AI Growth Story Meets Its Financing Question as Analysts Stay Bullish
Published on 10/23/2026 at 16:32 | Editorial boerse-global.deBroadcom shares slipped 4.1% yesterday, caught in a sector-wide downdraft that media reports linked to renewed worries over artificial intelligence spending. No company-specific trigger was identified for the decline. The drop came even as Tigress Financial initiated coverage of the stock with a Buy rating and a $600 price target, setting up a contrast between a bullish long-term view and near-term pressure across the semiconductor space.
A modest 0.3% gain today points to a tentative stabilization, though it hardly settles the larger question of how AI investments will actually develop. The company's recent software announcements touch on other areas of the business and do not directly address the sector-wide concerns.
Tigress Backs Multiple Growth Engines
Tigress is betting on multi-year growth driven by AI chips, networking technology and enterprise software. The analysts see Broadcom well positioned in custom AI accelerators, high-performance networking and optical connectivity, with mission-critical enterprise software adding another leg. The Buy rating therefore rests on more than an expectation of rising chip demand alone.
The numbers behind that thesis are substantial. Revenue over the trailing twelve months reached $89.1 billion, up 49%, with a gross margin of 76%. Looking ahead, Tigress points to recurring software revenue and the VMware private AI cloud, alongside progress in chip packaging, optical innovation and capacity expansion, as supports for growth and profitability. The price target expresses these expectations; it is not a promise of future share performance.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Broadcom?
Capital, Not Memory, Emerges as the Key Constraint
Broadcom had already flagged the financing side of growth before the latest industry pullback. According to Reuters, CEO Hock Tan said on October 12 that capital would become the biggest bottleneck for AI-driven growth — not memory chips. At the same time, he said the company was overcoming constraints in wafers and memory chips.
That shifts attention beyond technical supply capability to how the investments themselves get funded. Tan's remark should be kept separate from yesterday's price action: it describes his assessment of growth hurdles, not a newly reported setback for Broadcom.
A Ten-Year VMware Commitment in Japan
On the software side, Broadcom announced a ten-year agreement with NTT DOCOMO on Monday covering VMware products and support. VMware Cloud Foundation forms the core of DOCOMO's private cloud infrastructure. The companies did not disclose a contract value. Broadcom Japan described the deal as its first comprehensive contract of this duration, covering licenses, maintenance and technical support; the partnership dates back to 2019.
NTT DOCOMO aims to strengthen the continuity, availability and security of its private cloud, while supporting virtual machines, containers and AI applications on a single platform. The partners also plan more AI-driven operational automation. For the investment case, the long-term software commitment is what matters most: it fits the recurring revenue that Tigress cites as a pillar of profitability.
A day later came word that FedEx will continue using VMware Cloud Foundation, Avi Load Balancer and Tanzu Platform under a bundled infrastructure agreement. Financial terms were not released. Both announcements demonstrate continued use of the products but offer no way to quantify additional revenue.
Optical Networking Tests Add a Second Track
In parallel, KDDI and Broadcom began joint tests of optical networking technology for GPU networks. At a KDDI AI data center, the partners are examining the power consumption and communication performance of switches with integrated optical connectivity, using Broadcom's Tomahawk 6 and the Davisson optical module. The tests cover packet loss, handling of network congestion and usable throughput in distributed AI training and inference. KDDI intends to use the results to develop a photonics network architecture for its AI data centers, and the cooperation is to be presented at the KDDI SUMMIT next Tuesday and Wednesday.
Broadcom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The distinction matters: the VMware contract is already signed, while the KDDI work is initially technical testing. Long-term customer ties and possible future deployments contribute to the growth story in different ways.
Fraud Defense Joins the Product Lineup
Broadcom also introduced Arcot Scam Defense on Wednesday. The feature is designed to detect and block fraud attempts in which customers are manipulated into card payments without presenting a physical card. It is meant to work even after customers have already passed authentication.
For investors, the picture separates cleanly. The recent company news concerns customer agreements and product extensions. Yesterday's selling pressure, by contrast, was attributed to worries about AI spending across the entire semiconductor sector. No new negative Broadcom-specific trigger can be derived from it.
