BYD will launch the second-generation Seal 07 in China on 5 November 2026, fielding the model in both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid form as it tries to reverse a slide in demand for the nameplate. The rollout lands against a weaker sales backdrop — and against a widening divide among analysts over whether BYD's headline profit growth is worth the multiple.

Display cars are already in place across 131 Chinese cities, and blind reservations opened on 26 October, letting buyers stake a claim before the official debut. The electric versions are quoted at CLTC ranges of 775 km and 875 km depending on variant. The plug-in hybrid pairs a turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and is rated at 245 km of electric range on the WLTC cycle. Because the two figures rest on different test standards, they are not directly comparable.

A provisional dealer price of RMB 180,000 has surfaced, though BYD has made clear this is not the official final figure — leaving pricing as one of the key unknowns of the launch. A market entry in Australia has not been confirmed.

A Lineup Under Pressure

The timing matters. The Seal family shifted 46,718 vehicles in September 2026, down 9.04% from the same month a year earlier. Over January to September, volumes reached 304,723 units, a decline of 14.11% year on year. The weakness is not a one-month blip, which raises the stakes for the new generation: reservations and showroom cars signal preparation, not recovery. The official price, and then the sales trend that follows, will be the first real tests of whether the Seal 07 can halt the slide.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Two Banks, Two Verdicts

On the earnings side, the picture is more nuanced. BYD lifted third-quarter 2026 net profit by 28.08% year on year to RMB 10.02 billion, according to results published on Thursday. That still fell short of expectations: Reuters reported broker estimates had ranged between RMB 11.4 billion and RMB 12.95 billion, and flagged margin pressure from fierce domestic competition.

Morgan Stanley, for its part, reaffirmed an "Overweight" rating on the H-shares on Friday with a target of HK$114, stressing the profitability of the overseas business and the company's ability to convert that business into earnings. The broker also pointed to currency losses of more than RMB 2 billion in the third quarter of 2026 — a burden it weighed without abandoning its positive stance.

JPMorgan took the opposite tack on Tuesday, cutting the A-shares from "Neutral" to "Underweight" and slashing its target to RMB 65 from RMB 88. It cited stagnating domestic demand, higher component costs, lower VAT rebates on exports and the prospect of EU import quotas on plug-in hybrids. The H-shares kept a "Neutral" rating, but their target was trimmed to HK$60 from HK$88.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The distinction between share classes is worth keeping in mind: the downgrade applied specifically to the A-shares, even as the bank turned more cautious on the H-shares' valuation.

Where the two houses diverge is on earnings quality. Morgan Stanley looks past the currency hit; JPMorgan foregrounds demand, cost and trade risks. For investors, a rising quarterly profit is only part of the story — the real question is how durable those earnings are against domestic competition, and how much profitable contribution the overseas business can deliver. That is precisely where the two calls part ways.
