The timing could hardly be more convenient. Just as BYD's Hong Kong-listed shares claw their way back from a late-June trough, the Chinese electric-vehicle giant is preparing to unveil its first humanoid robot prototype — a move that pitches it squarely against Tesla's Optimus programme and hands investors a fresh narrative beyond batteries and cars.

The reveal is slated for early August at a "Di Space" showroom in Zhengzhou, a four-storey technology experience centre rather than a conventional dealership. The news first surfaced on 25 July via a teaser image on the WeChat channel of the Zhengzhou branch, with BYD subsequently confirming the presentation to the China Securities Journal. Details remain thin — no product name, no design, no technical specifications — but the strategic intent is already clear.

Two or Three Robots Per Showroom

BYD vice-president Stella Li has sketched out the ambition behind the project. The goal, she said, is to place two to three robots in every dealer showroom, where they would explain vehicle models, demonstrate features and liven up the atmosphere. Li expects the robotic sales assistants to be commercially ready within the next one to two years, though she stressed they are not meant to replace human interaction between customers and sales staff.

The initiative has deeper roots than this week's teaser suggests. BYD established an embodied-AI research team back in 2022, and at the end of last year set up a dedicated unit — its 15th business division — focused on humanoid robots. The company has pushed back against reports of 150 household robots already in operation or plans for 20,000 units of serial production this year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

BYD is wading into crowded territory. Aimoga, a brand under the Chery umbrella, already sells humanoid robots to consumers. SAIC-GM deploys wheel-based humanoids in battery assembly, and Xpeng is targeting series production of its Iron robot by year-end. The Chinese dominance of the sector is stark: of the roughly 13,000 humanoid robots delivered worldwide in 2025, about 90 percent came from Chinese factories. Whether these machines can take on unpredictable, economically viable tasks at scale remains a point of contention among researchers.

Dividend Cheque Arrives Mid-Rally

The robot news lands alongside a shareholder payout that was settled on 31 July 2026. BYD distributed its final dividend for fiscal 2025 to holders of its Hong Kong listing, paying 0.41141 Hong Kong dollars per share. The sum was originally approved in yuan — 0.358 per share at the annual general meeting on 9 June 2026 — and converted at a rate of 1 yuan to 1.1492 Hong Kong dollars for H-share holders, who can also opt for partial payment in yuan.

Tax treatment varies by investor type. Non-resident institutional H-share holders face a 10 percent Chinese corporate tax, while domestic southbound-trading investors are subject to 20 percent income tax. Foreign retail shareholders remain exempt from Chinese income tax on this distribution for now.

The payout arrives as the stock rides a notable upswing. BYD's Hong Kong shares closed Friday at EUR 10.30, down 0.94 percent on the day, but the four-week picture tells a different story: the equity has climbed more than 28 percent since touching EUR 8.03 at the end of June. That recovery has been underpinned by improving overseas figures — June marked the second consecutive month of export growth, with foreign sales hitting a record level and partially offsetting a decline in China, where competition has intensified.

Fresh Catalysts and a Key Date

Beyond the dividend and the robot debut, BYD has been stacking up corporate developments. An exclusive infotainment partnership with DTS AutoStage will bring audio and video entertainment to future BYD vehicles across Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. The rollout is pencilled in for the fourth quarter of 2026, possibly earlier, and makes BYD the 14th major automaker to adopt the platform.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The stock still has ground to reclaim. It sits 22.18 percent below its August 2025 high of EUR 13.23, though the recent momentum has pushed it comfortably above its 50-day average of EUR 9.53. The relative strength index of 61.7 points to fresh buying pressure without signalling overbought conditions.

The next milestone on the calendar is late August 2026, when BYD reports second-quarter results for its Hong Kong listing. Investors will be watching closely whether the export-driven momentum can hold up against persistent pressure in the domestic market. As for the robots, the key question is less whether humanoid machines can function — other manufacturers have already proven that — but how quickly BYD can turn an experimental prototype into a sellable product for its dealer network. Production capacity, pricing and rollout speed are likely to drive the market's reaction in the weeks ahead.
