BYD Rides a Sector Tailwind as Australia Milestone, Kadena Curbs and Softer Goldman Estimates Pull in Different Directions
Published on 10/23/2026 at 13:11 | Editorial boerse-global.deBYD shares advanced 3.4% on Thursday, but the gain says less about the company than about the mood surrounding Hong Kong-listed automakers and battery makers. Li Auto, Nio, XPeng and battery giant CATL all climbed alongside the Shenzhen-based group, pointing to a broad sector recovery rather than a company-specific catalyst.
That distinction matters for anyone reading the day's news as a verdict on BYD's prospects. A shared rebound across several names is no evidence that individual operational or regulatory questions have been settled. The corporate announcements themselves paint a mixed picture of continued expansion and concrete restrictions.
150,000 Vehicles in Australia, With More Sites to Come
On the operational front, BYD Australia confirmed delivery of its 150,000th vehicle in the country. The company also said it expects more than 150 sales and service locations nationwide by the end of the year.
The delivery figure captures the scale the Australian business has already reached. The site target, by contrast, concerns the build-out of customer service and distribution. Keeping the two apart is essential: the 150,000th handover has happened, while the location count remains a company expectation.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
A Base Ban With a Narrow Footprint
Separately, news emerged that US forces in Japan will bar BYD vehicles from Kadena Air Base on Okinawa, effective October 26. Security risks to personnel and operations were cited as the reason.
The measure governs access to one military installation. It does not amount to a general sales ban in Japan, nor to any nationwide restriction. That limited scope is the key to reading the headline correctly.
New Models, New Charging Tech
BYD's product push has also moved forward. The new Seagull is offered in five trim levels, priced from RMB 65,900 to RMB 99,900, pairing the model changeover with a spread of price points across the line-up. Fast-charging capability, built on the second-generation Blade Battery, is the central technical feature of the launch.
The range-topping addition is the Great Han, an electric flagship sedan unveiled in China. According to media reports, it delivers more than 1,000 kilometres of range and also supports fast charging. The two models pull in different directions: the Seagull leads on entry pricing and new charging technology, while the Great Han tops the portfolio. Neither gives a concrete read on earnings.
A product launch on its own is no proof of extra sales or higher profits. Investors would do well to weigh product progress and earnings performance separately.
Goldman Keeps Its Buy, Trims Its Numbers
Goldman Sachs reiterated its buy rating on BYD on October 15 and left its price target at HK$134 — neither a fresh upgrade nor a raised target. The endorsement came with more cautious assumptions on profitability, a combination that deserves attention: a buy rating does not mean near-term business expectations have improved.
BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
For 2026–2030, the bank cut its profit estimates by 2%–6%, attaching lower forecasts to an unchanged investment recommendation.
Malaysia Assembly and the October 29 Date
Media reports also indicate BYD signed a letter of intent with Malaysian automaker Inokom on local contract assembly. Such an agreement is not yet a binding manufacturing contract.
What lies ahead is a quarterly update, with the company reportedly planning to publish results on October 29. Until then, the sector rally offers a tailwind for the stock, while the Australian delivery milestone, the Kadena access restriction and the trimmed profit forecasts remain separate factors in the valuation. The share price move alone does not resolve the tension between them.
