BYD's Brazil Blueprint Doubles Down as Working Capital and Currency Losses Test the Growth Story
Published on 11/01/2026 at 17:42 | Editorial boerse-global.deBYD has asked Brazilian authorities to double the annual capacity of its local plant to 600,000 vehicles — a filing, not yet an approved expansion, that nonetheless signals the scale the carmaker envisions for its South American manufacturing base. The request lands at an awkward moment: the company's receivables and inventories have been climbing far faster than sales, and analysts are openly divided over how much of the growth actually reaches the bottom line.
A Balance Sheet Under Scrutiny
As of September 30, receivables stood 52.6% above their level at the end of 2025, according to media reports, while inventories had risen 60.1%. Neither figure on its own proves the business is deteriorating. Together, though, they sharpen the question of how quickly BYD converts vehicles into cash and clears stock — a question that carries extra weight given soft domestic demand and relentless price competition in China.
The third quarter of 2026 offered a mixed answer. Revenue climbed 13.6% to RMB 221.5 billion, snapping a streak of four consecutive quarters of declining sales. Profit for the period also rose, but fell short of what analysts had penciled in. Growth, in other words, has resumed; the cost of financing it has not yet been fully reflected in the numbers.
Two Banks, Two Verdicts
Morgan Stanley on Friday kept its "overweight" rating on BYD's H-shares and a target price of HK$114, placing the emphasis on overseas profitability and the company's ability to turn its business into earnings. The broker flagged foreign-exchange losses exceeding RMB 2 billion in the third quarter of 2026 — a hit it was willing to look past.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
JPMorgan took the opposite tack on Tuesday, cutting its rating on the A-shares from "neutral" to "underweight." The U.S. bank cited stagnating domestic demand, higher component costs, lower VAT rebates on exports and the prospect of EU import quotas on plug-in hybrids. Its target on the A-shares fell from RMB 88 to RMB 65. The H-shares kept a "neutral" rating, but their target was trimmed from HK$88 to HK$60.
The distinction between share classes matters: the downgrade applied specifically to the A-line, even as the bank grew more cautious on the H-line as well.
What the Quarter Actually Delivered
BYD's report, published Thursday, showed net profit up 28.08% year on year to RMB 10.02 billion in the third quarter of 2026. Reuters noted that broker estimates had ranged between RMB 11.4 billion and RMB 12.95 billion, and reported margin pressure from fierce domestic competition.
That gap between delivered and expected profit is where the two analyst camps diverge. Morgan Stanley is betting that overseas margins and execution will close it. JPMorgan is focused on the forces — demand, input costs, trade policy — that could keep it open.
Trade Rules and the Export Engine
Europe adds a further layer of uncertainty. According to Reuters, a China-EU agreement could expose BYD, as a major hybrid exporter, to new restrictions — hitting precisely the segment that has helped carry its international expansion.
BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
October's continued sales growth and strong overseas demand remain a meaningful counterweight to the difficult home market. They do not, however, erase either the domestic price war or the possibility of fresh export hurdles.
For investors, the Brazil capacity request and the balance-sheet trends belong in the same conversation. Larger production potential opens additional sales opportunities; it also raises the stakes on demand keeping pace with the build-out. The inventory figures are a reminder not to mistake capacity targets for business already booked. Whether BYD can pair its expansion with disciplined stock management and dependable access to foreign buyers — rather than rising sales alone — is the test that now matters.
