BYD's Export Engine Is Humming — the Earnings Engine Still Sputters

BYD's Q3 2026 net profit rose 28.1% to RMB 10.02 billion but fell short of brokerage estimates, even as October sales hit a 2026 high on export growth.

BYD shares drew fresh attention on Thursday as a 2.6% premarket advance highlighted the widening gap between what the Chinese automaker sells and what it earns. The trigger was familiar: overseas demand for Chinese cars, which Bloomberg cited as the force tempering investor anxiety over a sluggish home market. Yet the same session brought unaudited third-quarter figures that landed short of what brokerages had penciled in, leaving shareholders to weigh whether export momentum alone can carry the stock or whether the profit line must first catch up.

The October scorecard, released a day earlier, offered the bullish camp its best evidence yet. BYD moved 490,168 vehicles last month — its strongest showing of the year — for an 11% year-on-year gain, according to media reports. Exports did the heavy lifting, surging 102.8% to 170,194 units, a figure Reuters flagged as a counterweight to both the tepid domestic market and China's punishing price war. Within the total, 305,743 were pure battery-electric models, and the production-and-sales release dated Thursday labeled the numbers unaudited.

What the volume headline cannot do is settle the earnings question. Net profit for the third quarter of 2026 came in at RMB 10.02 billion, up 28.1% from a year earlier but beneath the RMB 11.4 billion to RMB 12.95 billion range that Reuters-compiled brokerage estimates had projected. Revenue, for its part, climbed 13.6% to RMB 221.5 billion. The combination argues against any narrative of a shrinking business — yet it also shows that growth alone is not enough to clear the bar the market has set.

That bar looks higher still when the year is taken as a whole. Cumulative sales from January through October reached 3,621,744 units, running 2.16% below the prior-year level, while net profit for the first nine months totaled RMB 22.34 billion — a 4.2% decline, per Reuters. A single record month, however impressive, does not erase that deficit.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Balance-sheet items add another layer of caution. In a Friday filing, BYD disclosed credit and asset impairments of RMB 3,654,330 thousand for January through September 2026, of which RMB 2,794,209 thousand stemmed from inventory write-downs. These figures document a hit already booked; they neither prove further deterioration nor signal imminent relief. Reading the export surge as evidence of a cleaned-up risk profile would be premature.

The bull case, then, rests on a straightforward proposition: if overseas demand holds, BYD can keep offsetting weak local deliveries and broaden its growth base. The revenue and profit expansion of the past quarter give that thesis a foothold. But the argument only becomes convincing if strong foreign orders translate, quarter after quarter, into results that meet expectations — not merely into higher shipment counts.

Should export momentum fade before domestic demand recovers, the recent relief would lose much of its force. The same holds if deliveries keep climbing while earnings keep disappointing: growth without profit leverage would do little to dispel doubts.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

A concrete near-term checkpoint arrives on November 5, when the second-generation Seal 07 is scheduled to hit the market. BYD has already opened pre-orders, according to media reports. The launch is a product event first and foremost — proof of fresh demand it is not. New models can widen the sales base; only the coming delivery and earnings reports will show whether they deepen the bottom line.
