BYD has picked up a five-star safety rating for its SHARK DMO pickup from Euro NCAP, a result the European testing body confirmed today after drawing on a 2025 assessment by its Australian counterpart ANCAP and backing it with additional European testing. The top score hands the Chinese automaker fresh credibility as it pushes into demanding markets well beyond its home turf.

Investors, though, barely blinked. The stock added 0.5% in today's session to change hands at EUR 8.32, leaving it just 3.7% above its 52-week low of EUR 8.03. On other European trading venues the shares were quoted at EUR 8.34, up 0.7% on the day, though they remain down 22% since the start of the year.

A Seven-Seat SUV for Europe, a Flagship Sedan for China

The safety nod for the pickup arrives days after BYD unwrapped another addition to its European lineup. On Monday the company showed the ATTO 8, a seven-seat electric SUV built around a 115 kWh second-generation Blade battery and rated for a combined WLTP range of up to 405 miles. It also supports a fast-charging system marketed as FLASH Charging. European sales are slated to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

At home, the product offensive moved just as quickly. On Tuesday BYD launched the Da Han, a fully electric flagship sedan offered in three variants priced between 235,900 and 275,900 yuan. The longest-legged rear-wheel-drive version covers up to 1,008 kilometers on China's CLTC test cycle.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The company's supplier business is expanding in parallel. Battery installations in China climbed to 18.29 gigawatt-hours in September, according to data from the country's automotive battery industry association, giving BYD a 21.09% market share — a modest gain on the prior month and enough to keep it in second place behind CATL.

Overseas Wins, a Softer Home Market

New vehicle categories are clearly doing some of the heavy lifting abroad. In the UK, the company's local subsidiary logged 20,140 new registrations in September, its strongest month and strongest quarter yet in that market.

The broader picture is less flattering. Exports of vehicles with alternative drivetrains reached 180,700 units in September, yet total sales across the first nine months of 2026 came to just over 3.13 million vehicles, down 3.94% from a year earlier.

That mix of export momentum and weaker domestic demand has analysts trimming their targets. CGS International reaffirmed its buy rating on October 8 but cut its price target to EUR 11.78 from EUR 12.96. JPMorgan, according to media reports, also lowered its target on Tuesday. The US bank had already downgraded the stock on September 29, moving from "Overweight" to "Neutral" and slashing its target to HKD 88 from HKD 124, citing softer domestic demand, rising procurement costs and trade-policy uncertainty.

Goldman Sachs is taking the other side of the trade. The investment bank reiterated its buy rating on BYD's H-shares today with a target of HKD 134, ahead of the third-quarter report due on October 29. Goldman projects revenue of RMB 242.936 billion for the period and a net profit of RMB 11.5 billion.

Sentiment has also been buffeted by reports that Europe may curb hybrid imports and that Beijing plans to trim export tax rebates. Two dates now anchor the calendar: on October 20 BYD intends to begin sales of the second-generation Seagull, whose pre-orders opened roughly a week ago, and on October 29 the board will meet to approve and publish unaudited figures for the third quarter and the first nine months of the year.
