BYD's Global Push Cuts Both Ways as Autonomous Bus Debuts and Lawmakers Circle
Published on 11/07/2026 at 09:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deBYD rolled out an autonomous electric bus in Singapore and a new long-distance coach in Birmingham this week, but the same international expansion that drove those launches is also inflating the company's working capital and drawing political attention in Europe.
The 8.5-metre right-hand-drive B90, unveiled Wednesday with partner MOGOX at Singapore Urban Mobility Week, splits the labour cleanly: BYD supplies the bus platform while MOGOX contributes the self-driving system. The vehicle is engineered for Level 4 autonomy. A day earlier, at Euro Bus Expo in Birmingham, BYD showed the C12 DUO — an electric touring coach rather than a city bus, and a solo effort unlike the MOGOX tie-up.
Balance sheet feels the overseas strain
Reuters reported on 29 October that BYD's trade receivables had climbed 52.6% from the end of the year, while inventories stood 60.1% higher as of 30 September. Both increases largely reflect the growth of the company's international automotive business, according to the agency.
The expansion has a political dimension too. Fourteen members of the European Parliament asked the European Commission on Wednesday to assess potential security risks posed by the company's vehicles, according to media reports. The lawmakers also floated measures such as exclusion from public procurement tenders. Their move is a request for an assessment, not an enacted restriction — a possible political response rather than an existing procurement ban.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
Q3 profit rises, but not enough
The figures published on 29 October showed earnings growth that fell short of expectations. BYD booked a third-quarter 2026 net profit of 10 billion yuan, up 28% year on year, against broker estimates compiled by Reuters of between 11.4 billion and 12.95 billion yuan. Revenue advanced 13.6% to 221.5 billion yuan.
At home, the picture was tougher: domestic sales slid roughly 12% during the quarter amid intensifying competition, Reuters reported.
AI partnership signed, assistance rumours quashed
BYD and vivo have signed a strategic cooperation agreement on AI-driven mobility, covering cross-device integration and the networking of smartphones and vehicles, according to media reports from yesterday. The tie-up targets the interplay between the two device ecosystems and the use of artificial intelligence in mobility.
BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
On driver assistance, BYD on Wednesday rebutted media speculation of a strategy shift, denying both that God's Eye C would be discontinued and claims that systems B and C were to be migrated to a different assistance solution. Development stays in-house, the company said, and software updates continue.
BYD also warned yesterday about fraudulent recall notices circulating in its name, with senders making false claims about warranty expiry. Official recall communications are issued through authorised dealers, the company said.
