BYD's Global Push Gathers Speed While Investors Keep Their Distance

BYD's record exports and global expansion contrast with falling shares, as investors question valuation amid rapid product launches and local market strategies.

BYD Exports Hit Record, Yet Share Price Slips: Market Weighs Global Ambitions

There is a curious disconnect at the heart of BYD's current story. The Chinese automaker is posting record export numbers, launching products at a pace that leaves rivals breathless, and planting flags on three continents — yet its share price keeps drifting lower. The market, it seems, is still trying to figure out which BYD it is actually valuing.

The July delivery figures illustrate the tension perfectly. BYD shipped 419,211 new-energy vehicles during the month, a 21.76 percent improvement year-on-year, with production climbing even faster to 420,249 units — up 32.20 percent. The real headline, though, was the export component: 179,841 vehicles left Chinese shores, a record that now represents roughly 43 percent of total monthly sales. Even the commercial vehicle division joined the party, moving 8,139 buses and trucks, a 149 percent surge and the segment's strongest month on record.

Local Roots, Global Ambitions

Nowhere is BYD's international playbook more visible than in Brazil, where the company this week launched its first locally manufactured plug-in hybrid — the Song Pro Super-Híbrido Flex Fuel. The project absorbed around 100 million reais in preparation over two years, but that is pocket change next to what comes next: 5.5 billion reais earmarked for the Camaçari plant, which should produce roughly 180,000 vehicles this year. The market response has been emphatic. Sales have more than doubled to 23,465 vehicles from 9,680 in the year-earlier period, lifting BYD's Brazilian market share to 9.1 percent and fourth place overall.

Japan offers a variation on the same theme. Late July brought the Racco kei-car to Tokyo, a model engineered specifically for the micro-car segment that accounts for about a third of all Japanese vehicle sales. BYD clearly understands that global ambitions require local precision rather than one-size-fits-all exports.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The premium Denza brand is sharpening its own edge. Pre-sales for the all-electric Z9S sedan opened this week at 319,800 yuan, with BYD claiming the largest range of any production EV — surpassing the 1,036-kilometer benchmark previously set by the Z9GT. Rivals like Xiaomi's SU7 are crowding the same space, a reminder of how congested China's premium segment has become. Meanwhile, the battery-electric version of the Da Han, promising up to 1,008 kilometers, is slated for its public debut at the Chengdu Auto Show on August 21.

A Product Cycle That Never Pauses

Speed has become BYD's defining characteristic — sometimes almost comically so. The Seal 07 sedan, which only arrived in spring, is already being replaced. Documents filed with China's industry ministry in early August show the new version stretching to 5,080 millimeters and gaining a LiDAR-based driver assistance system, just five months after its predecessor launched. The company also filed six patents last week for a dual-electrolyte cathode architecture in solid-state batteries, targeting 400 watt-hours per kilogram of energy density and 1,200 kilometers of range, with small-batch testing planned for 2027.

That relentless tempo extends to factory planning, where decisions appear to shift almost monthly. BYD has indefinitely shelved its $1 billion plant project in Manisa, Turkey, redirecting strategic priority to the Szeged facility in Hungary to serve the European market. In Malaysia, the government is still awaiting formal word on the proposed assembly plant in Tanjung Malim, according to trade minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. Brazil, by contrast, is already operational. Three continents, three different speeds of execution.

The Home Market Drag

The overseas momentum is essential because the domestic picture has deteriorated. January-to-July new-energy vehicle sales came in at 2,227,722 units, a 10.54 percent decline from the prior-year period. The brutal price war among Chinese automakers at home shows no signs of letting up, which makes the international diversification less a strategic choice than a competitive necessity.

Investors, however, remain unmoved. The stock closed Friday at 10.04 euros, down 3.03 percent on the week and 6.25 percent below its year-ago level. It still sits 4.60 percent under its 200-day moving average. Jefferies analyst Xiaoyi Lei reaffirmed a Hold rating on Tuesday with a target of 106.00 Hong Kong dollars — neither enthusiasm nor alarm. BlackRock's disclosure of a 2.99 percent stake in the Chinese listing, equivalent to more than 271 million shares, suggests institutional capital is staying put despite the share price weakness.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The company did confirm its entry into robotics last Tuesday, a move that coincided with a 2.6 percent dip in the stock — the market apparently unimpressed by diversification beyond autos. A dividend of 3.58 yuan per ten shares for fiscal 2025, paid on July 31, offered some reassurance of financial stability.

In Germany, BYD is working to embed itself in everyday life, launching a nationwide fleet initiative for taxis and rental cars around the Seal 6 DM-i Touring plug-in hybrid at the end of July, together with four conversion partners.

The next test arrives on August 29, when BYD reports its half-year results. The question hanging over that release is whether the export surge is translating into margin improvement — and whether a company that replaces its own flagship model after five months can ever stand still long enough for the market to catch its breath.
